Re: Have you speared another spearo?
Years ago we had the owner (no names) of a local dive shop spearfishing out of a kayak. As the story was told, the owner was starting to climb into his kayak with his buddy just behind him. The partners gun was still banded and something caused the gun to go off. The owner took one through his spine resulting in permanent paralyzes below the waist. A true tragedy, the owner was a young guy with a great shop. No longer in the area, closed the business. Reminds you to always now were that shaft is pointing. It only takes a second !!!
Second, I was sitting on the beach in Carmel watching divers get hammered on a rough beach exit. As a spearo was being dumped in the shore break, his trident tip went right through his hand. We helped him out and that tip was clear through the center of his hand. Great lesson for life, I always make sure I cover the tip when i'm done hunting and swimming in on our dive boards. We get some pretty gnarly exits up here on the noth coast. Be safe

Re: Have you speared another spearo?
Never seen a gun go off without the trigger pulled, never seen anyone shot with a speargun or know anyone who has been. On the other hand, I did see this happen. Years ago before I had my own boat, I dove on a local charter that catered to spearfishermen. This guy had an older model Hatteras, and he had a blue plastic barrel lashed in a corner for storing spearguns. The guns were put into the barrel with the tips pointing up. One guy was coming down from the fly bridge, slipped and fell on that barrel. He got a tri cut spear tip stuck in his bicep. On the same boat, another guy was trying to get a slip tip out of a lemonfish on the deck of the boat. He had his hand in its gills attemting to turn the tip around when the fish went nuts. He started screaming and thats when we found out that the tip had went in his hand.

Re: Have you speared another spearo?
two years ago i shot accidentally shot my buddy. we are spearing for carp in 8" to a good 15"inches of visibility and agreed to dive a few meters apart(small river) after a few dives a carp swam in front of me. i fired and missed(carp was too fast) and i hit my buddy who unknowingly crept too close(thank god we only use 3feet of line) i hit him at the end of my spearline on his left side. the sliptip burried 3/4ths of an inch. we are using homemade speargun with a lever instead of a trigger and 3/16th of an inch spear shaft. i almost pass out when i realized that i have shit my friend. so safe hunting brothers

Re: Have you speared another spearo?
Yes...I had an old balco sub with a faulty safety just go off...it narrowly missed my best friend at the time. I think I was 14. Easily avoided, make sure that trigger and safety mechs are clean and function properly. Treat it like a loaded gun.

Re: Have you speared another spearo?
This thread is sounding like winter is here early. Pick your dive buddies responsibly, a loaded gun is the least of our worries- in this sport, it ain't the arrow it's the injun.

Re: Have you speared another spearo?
I'll fess up and say yes, I have possibly speared another spearo, but it was an absolute fluke thing. We were diving as a group of four on some army tanks and my dive buddy and I went to one tank while the other pair went to another tank. My dive buddy was behind me when I looked under the tank and saw several grouper stacked up. I backed out, looked at my buddy and signaled that I was going to shoot under the tank. The tank was buried somewhat and to look under it, you had to lay on the sand in somewhat of a trench to see under it. I looked under again and shot at a grouper and later found out in the dive that the other divers had got mixed up and went to the other side of the tank we were on and one of them looked under the tank as I shot.
We still aren't sure if my spear or a fish hit him, but something struck his left BC strap with force. My spearing rig had about 20-25' of range with how I shot the fish and the tank was about 25' feet long. Spearo was fine and there was no penetration. We will never know what happened, but definitely was a lesson for us all.
