Another Project for my Kayak
After setting up my fidshfinder on my Tarpon 160, I found that I did not really like the setup with the smaller (and heavy) motorcycle battery. It was a pain in the ass. So, I decided to look on-line for a better setup. I found one on one of the websites as a kit that was $50, plus shipping. I did not think I needed most of the crap that came with it.
I decided to just buy the battery pack (8 AA batteries) and the wire connector. All I needed was some wire, which I had, a waterproof case to put the battery unit in and a few things to attach it to my kayak somehow. I had the Otter Box from a previous project that I no longer needed. The footmans loops were so I could attach them to a 2" web belt. They ended up working out great having them on there, as it helped to lock and secure the box in place, and make the straps hold easier. The hole I drilled into the Otter Box was sealed once the wires were ran through it. With the Otter Box attached to the lid of the hatch, it stays out of the way and is light enough, not to weigh down on the lid. All of the wires are waterproofed and detachable, in the event I need to remove the Otter Box. Not including the Otter Box and Marine Goop, everything ran me about $5. Fun project. Took about 30 minutes to build once I had my plan and parts.

Re: Another Project for my Kayak
I like it. I also hate the motor cycle battery. It is bulky and cumbersome. This is an elega t solution.
I saw someone who made the same cell out of a PVC tube with eight AAs in a line and run in the top of the inside of the kayak. Very cool solution to the problem.

Nice work, how much run time do you think you'll have with this setup? I'm currently using this, http://www.cabelas.com/product/Cabel...Fejm7Aodi0YAZQ
Not nearly as heavy as a motorcycle battery, powers my gps/fishfinder for a long long time without needing a charge. |

Haven't checked, but I think I can fit two battery housings inside the Otter Box.
