You can actually see 2 big Carbo's on it along with a big Gag and 2 big red grouper.

Here are a couple of photos of an old porthole I found on a wreck in the gulf. I was pursuing a gag that had hightailed away from the wreck and saw a sliver of something green sticking out of the sand. It turned out to be a piece of wood with some green paint on it and was attached to this porthole. The gag got away but I ended up with a nice souvenir. It was completely encrusted but a couple of days soak in dilute muriatic acid and some elbow grease and it cleaned it up very well. The only parts I had to replace were the screws that fasten the retaining ring that holds in the 1/2" glass.

I'm going to replace the front door at our place up in Homosassa and this porthole is going to be built into it.

Re: Interesting Finds

Found one like that, too.
It now serves as an anchor rope locker-lid on the deck of my boat.

Not the kind of utility I'd hope for with underwater finds but a find nonetheless!

Re: Interesting Finds

this lead seemed to be very old. it was covered in marine growth. i read an old article about the schooners that used to sail out of the panhandle to catch red snappers. as they were going along one of the fishermen would throw this lead ahead of the boat with a small hook and bait connected to the line. if he caught a red snapper the boat would quickly try to turn into the wind and anchor hoping to get on the meat! grouper wasn't worth much and was treated as by catch. the red snapper were the money fish.

maybe this is one of those fishing/sounding leads that were used over 100 yrs ago.

I saw one of these years ago in a tackle shop up in the Panhandle. The one you found is a match to the one I saw. Pretty sure you're right and it's a sounding/fish locating weight. Nice find!

Re: Interesting Finds
