All About Pole Spears & Slings What is it about that traditional method of the early hunter/gatherers under the water? These devices are indeed interesting and effective.

My latest build: Big Game Polespear

So...I recently broke my gen 1 8ft spear (Too much power, too little half twist).

I decided it was time to upgrade and moved on to 6061-T6.
When I was cruising through my local metal supply shop I found some
3/4" OD tubing and purchased about 11 ft of it for $2.15..

Went home, and had a go at it.

Here are some pictures of the build process and how it turned out.

Current pole length is around 10ft. It's outfitted with a 1/2" OD 1/8" ID band running around 350% stretch which is about 82 lbs.

The next phases are band tuning (testing in water), a slip tip and then learning how to make it into a two piece (set screws?).

I'd love to hear any feedback/tips or questions.

Best Regards,

Ren

Re: My latest build: Big Game Polespear

Here's a quick update in case anyone is interested:

I converted the 9ft polespear I broke into a 6.5ft polespear ( great for perch and small game). The big game spear is still in the first phase of band tuning. After four months of waiting for good vis, here's a video of how it turned out.

I'm currently running a 0.312 OD band with a Manny knot (I think it's called a Manny knot). The spear is fairly neutral in the water, like my carbon spear (fully sealed and plugged), so when you drop it in the water it sinks at a very slow rate and almost always land with the tip down.
Testing gear you made yourself is fun!

Sweet. I always wondered if making a polespear that was near neutrally buoyant would help speed it up.

Re: My latest build: Big Game Polespear

Just finished up another spear. It's 0.84" OD x 0.11" Wall x 0.622" ID 6061-T6 (Aluminum). Nice and thick for reef work and hole shooting. Still haven't figured out how to make it a two piece on the cheap (without sophisticated tooling)

Hey Ren,
Also, which band sizes to you tend to favor (ID x OD)?

The answer I can give you, is that "it depends" on the application, but I generally follow the
Crist Band Size Chart

Re: My latest build: Big Game Polespear

I ordered a whole bunch of Small ID Primeline in 12, 13 and 14.5mm so the force schematic is very cool to have.
It seems some of the Jap spearos have started using just one rubber (not a loop) of Small ID Sigalsub. I might do the same as the Small ID packs a punch over the regular polespear rubber - this is why Christ's force specs will be a good help.

Beautiful jap style spears here and some pics and video of the single rubber:

Would love to see your work. Good luck and have fun with the process.

Here's one I finished building a couple months ago.

Re: My latest build: Big Game Polespear

I'll definitely share the build - just too much work these days but I'm getting the parts together. I'm lucky in that I know a guy with a CNC lathe so I "just" have to come up with an ok design for the couplers and end fittings.

I'm aiming at something travel friendly though long. Three sections of about 120cm plus front shaft and tip.
