Thumbs up Report 4/9/12

Super clear water!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Something strange is happening. Went to packery, spearing next to the rock in super clear water (15 -20 ft vis) and had to worry about the 3 ft high waves throwing me onto the rocks.

Shot five big sheephead, one spadefish, and a small grouper. But, that is not the crazy thing. I had a blue water experience about 20 ft from the rocks. I saw a 40 + inch kingfish , not only that but up close . It circled me from only about 10 ft away. Had my speargun pointed at it and had to resist the temptation to pull the trigger, since I don't have a reel on my gun. Also, kingfish are a gamefish, so its illegal, but mainly since I didn't have a reel and didn't want to lose my gun. Also saw a 30+ inch black drum, once agian illegal, but mainly no reel. Other than that, a few tarpon and a few hundred snook.

If you can get out, I am guessing this clear water should last till Wednesday, but no longer, surf is suppose to pick up to 8 feet by Friday. Even if the water is clear (doubt it) I aint dealing with 9 foot surf, except with a surfboard .

Pics coming.

This is from the Texas Parks and Wildlife website http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/regulati...initions.phtml

Game Fish (includes hybrids or subspecies of fish on this list):

Bass: Guadalupe, largemouth, smallmouth, spotted, striped, white, yellow
Catfish: blue, channel, flathead
Cobia
Crappie: black, white
Mackerel: king, Spanish
Marlin: blue, white
Pickerel
Red drum
Sailfish
Sauger
Seatrout, spotted
Sharks
Snook
Spearfish, longbill
Swordfish, broadbill
Tarpon
Tripletail
Trout: brown, rainbow
Wahoo
Walleye

Nongame Fish: All species not listed as game fish except endangered and threatened fish (see http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild.../animals/fish/ ) which are defined and regulated under separate rules.

Smart move not spearing the kingfish. Getting caught with a speared one would mean a LOT of trouble for you. It is your risk, but "Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time."

Since black drum are not a subspecies of red drum or on the endangered or threatened list, they are legal to take with a speargun. With the vis that good, a well placed shot between the eye and the gill plate would take the fight out of a 30+ incher. It would be a bitch, but I think you would win a tug of war against one, if you went for center of mass.

Edit: I just saw that there is a 14-30 inch slot limit on black drum, with one fish over 52 inches per person per day. This sucks. I hate convoluted length limits.

Food for thought.

Thank you for the report. It gives me an incentive to visit my aunt and uncle in Houston. They are always asking me to visit, love to fish and have a spare kayak.
