A little Ventura County backcountry trout action anyone?
I decided to take a break from the ocean and head into the backcountry of Ventura County to do a little trout fishing. I just figured I'd offer the trip up to anyone who might be interested in either trying something new or just trying a new spot that they may have never seen. I'll be going just north of Magic Mountain in the Los Padres National Forest. This will be small creek fishing for lots of small natives and a few really bigs natives if you're willing to walk. I'll leave Camarillo around 6 or 7am. Give me a call if you're interested and as always; any day fishing is better than a day at work.

Re: A little Ventura County backcountry trout action anyone?
I love to fly fish, but this is a tight stream that requires serious finesse, so I prefer 1/64 oz spinners or a crimp weight with a small trout worm pitch just up current and slow rolled back into pockets under banks and boulders.
Finding good populations of native trout can be difficult in this area but they are here and thriving, it's all about locating them. Much like freediving, good times are sure to follow for those that are willing to put in the effort. |

I love me some trout fishing. Catching brookies is my favorite thing to do besides spearfishing.

Ehh just use a roll cast. You will catch more and spook less. Not sayin your not gonna catch anything though. Post photos if you can.
On another note I need to scan all my trout photos. I've spent 3 summers of My life in Dubois Wyoming fly fishing everyday.

Re: A little Ventura County backcountry trout action anyone?
Now I thought I was one of the few left willing to crawl on their belly through all sorts of brush and critters just to catch a few simple trout. But I guess this would be the spot to find 'em. Thanks for the ideas as how to fly fish these little creeks. I've tried the bow and arrow cast and it always turns out bad for me. I'm used to using the Pendulum to toss my tiny lures into holes but as for now I can only really do a full overhead/side rolling cast with my fly rod. When in doubt a fly and bubble works great.

Bow casting is very easy. You just need to take the time to practice. Go to a secluded park, one where there are not many people to get in the way and just practice. Once you feel comfortable, start trying to cast the "fly" ( usually a piece of yarn) into a small bowl or cup. Once you get good at this, you can pretty much place a fly in the most tight places. Also, roll-casting, from the left or and the right, takes a lot of practice. You will be shocked at how easy it is and how affective it will be to get into an area with over-hang. It is amazing how much you can improve by taking the time to practice. Best of luck. Post pics of your catch.

Heh, I have ablot of pics like that. My wife calls 'em "4-finger fish". She's a sport for tromping around with me while I look for trout.
