Albacore 2013
Ive been speaking to a charter boat this past week about spearfishing albacore, the season is in early august and its only 6 people per boat. The chumming technique they use gets the fish right up next to the boat.
The rate is $395.95 for 12 hours out on the water, and I'll be raising my money over the summer, ANYONE who is interested please contact me, this is just a preemptive post for all that would be interested, the charter is out of Wesport WA and for most of you that is a drive but I am almost certain it would be worth it. It would require a 75ft plus float-line with a large float and a gun of around 50"or 120cm and there WILL be sharks. I have in no way made any decision with the charter and if there is another more practical charter in Oregon or another part of Washington please post a response. The reason Im posting this now is to avoid a last minute dash, 9 months should be enough time to make a final decision. |

Re: Albacore 2013
Less than $70 per person? Count me in. I'd advise a shorter float line and longer gun, preferably with a break away tip.

Re: Albacore 2013
Is that Coleman's boat? He runs a great charter. It's $396 per person.
http://washingtontunacharters.com/ I'd be up for it. |

Re: Albacore 2013
Right. Pretty sure you can get a ticket to Mexico for about that much.

Re: Albacore 2013
This has been tried before a few times & didn't materialize, but I am definitely interested.
$2,400 for the boat for the day seems a bit expensive, but options are pretty limited. I think it's about a ~50 mile run out to the tuna grounds (obviously depending where they're at that day). They get them consistently out there on H&L. Keep me posted... From what I've seen, albies are fast like bullets & you have to chum them in, aim at a piece of chum & squeeze one off before they get to it... Usually some toothy competition. Kinda like this vid, except with our lovely vis... Spearing Albacore - New Zealand |

Re: Albacore 2013
As someone who has condiderable experience with northewest scuba charters, I have some thoughts for such an outing.
It is highly likely that the operator's liability insurance cuts off the moment someone intentionally hops in the water. And putting even a small number of divers in can quickly get out of hand in less than ideal surface conditions. This is where experience really matters for the operator. For selfish reasons I often wanted to visit challenging sites, but if you do that it is important to know as much as possible about your divers and their level of ability and experience. The person putting together something like this can probably quickly be tied to liability if there are serious problems. Your best bet may be 2-4 divers on a private boat. I hope you can make it work! |

Re: Albacore 2013
As I said, if anyone can find a larger boat for cheaper then please post a reply, this is equivalent to 1st class because it be only spearos, but Im sure another charter would let us get in for much much cheaper.

Re: Albacore 2013
If you want to do something different I would recommend it - I am lucky where I live in NZ because we don't have to go far offshore. You don't need a long floatline, big float or big gun, in fact a Euro style 120 or 130cm single rubber gun is ideal - they do move fast, but if you are patient they come close. You may well see sharks but as long as there are a few divers in the water that shouldn't be a problem - we see quite a few makos and blues here.
Of course it does only cost me $20 in gas for my albacore expeditions! |

Re: Albacore 2013
I'd be interested in something like this, if not this specific boat and have a couple others who would be as well so keep me posted if you are serious about either this or another boat.

Re: Albacore 2013
Always welcome Josh. My sister lives in Raglan now too - somewhere else to stay! Albacore - saw some nice ones last weekend - maybe 12kg? Biggest speared was the one in the photo - 8kg?

Re: Albacore 2013
I'm willing to make a flight up for some Oregon albacore. Casey(Devildiver) and I had been trying to do this for several years while I was living up there. Although the idea of shooting tuna with my 1-banded 120cm sounds like fun as Pat says, it would be safer to use a float(with perhaps a dive flag attached) and line in those moody Oregon/Washington offshore waters. It's definitely not the way to start out bluewater hunting for the inexperienced as opposed to areas further south. A buddy system would facilitate things.

Very nice video Josh. Being a hook and line guy as well, I appreciated both parts of that vid.

In all honesty, I would love to get a spear in an Albie or two but until I finish up college I definitely won't have the money for something like that. |
