Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

So I managed to dive this afternoon at Woq Woq O about 3 hours after high tide. Vis was variable ranging from 3-15'. There was some tar on the surface but no oil scum or heavy fumes. The water was quite chilly under the 3' thick layer of warm water at the top.

It wasnt very fishy at the outer kelp, and in the shallows in the thickest kelp there were still few of the usual reef dwellers. I did see tons of bugs out in the open, lots and lots of bat rays, and too many seals. There was sparse bait and just a few small seabass seen.

It was a good relaxing dive but I sort of wish I had gone to the Mesa instead.

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

Acting on a tip that reported "25' of vis" in a always murky kelp bed off Goletard slough I hit it today with Android and the Fry Cook at high tide. Of course after 1.5 hours of swimming and diving Im reporting 1-12' of vis.

Mostly it was about 5' except on the extreme ouiter kelp where it was a little better. Very quiet with few fish, we all got skunked. Cool and quiet was the reef today.

It was a good swim, but little else.

Sounds like I didn't miss much while I was up in Oregon for the past week...

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

well that makes it official, Im a total mud magnet and idiot kook. I saw it clear, I was told it was clear, i was pm'ed that there were fish, and I still dove a predictably muddy shit holes all weekend.

Nice goat Shen, you should get a good set of billybob jaws out of that one.

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

If it makes you feel any better, I dove Hendry's this afternoon around 2pm. Viz was maybe 3' to 6' at best, and the water was 61 degrees at the surface and 59 degrees at 20' (the deepest spot I dove). (Its August, right?)

I spent about an hour looking for halibut in the murk and never saw any. Spooked a couple of decent (14" to 15") calicos, but they sensed me way before I had a chance to see them.

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

Really 3-6 at hendry's today?! Cause I dove the mesa and had 12-15' of vis. Had the sun been out it would have been the best day of shore diving yet. Managed to pop off a surface shot and got a nice 18" calico.

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

Yea. I dove the incoming tide, and I think it brought in a bunch of junk. It looked like it could have been better earlier. I went out as far as 100' past the swim buoys (about 20') and the viz was consistent everywhere I checked. Wanted to bet out earlier, but I was stuck on conference calls... :-(

Shark Alert

I talked to commercial fisherman buddy of mine who said some friends of his had seen a GWS spotted off Governments, then Coho then Gaviota yesterday and reportedly Goleta this morning. Every time it was spotted at or near the surface. I hope it's just a rumor, but he's a pretty credible source.

When I asked him how big, his answer was "bigger than small."
