shooting an enclosed track??
Hi guys i just got my ulusub 150 rear handle with enclosed track... took it out to play a little to see how it shoots before actually hunted with it and wasnt quite on target. im used to shooting open track euro guns, a riffe euro 110 and c4 mr. carbon 104... do enclosed tracks shoot high or low?? any advice would be helpful.

Re: shooting an enclosed track??
Open track guns sometimes have shaft whip coming off an open muzzle. Im not well versed in how exactly that works but I know having the enclosed track negates the whipping of the shaft and makes the shaft travel straight off the barrel rather then jumping up a bit off the barrel. the shooting low part I cant say much about just because I dont know any better or how to explain it.

Re: shooting an enclosed track??
just curious, where you shooting a slip tip or flopper?
As i understand it, it makes a big difference, flopper shafts are supposed to be more accurate, although, I have being very accurate myself with some slip tips. Enclosed tracks should help with accuracy on bigger guns. I miss a bunch of shots with my new guns at first. I do think most guns well made shoot straight, but it is a matter of getting use to them for many different reasons. I shoot Wongs, R.A, Cressi, Ulusub, JBLs and even polespears. They all shoot differently one small way or the other. Is kind of annoying when you have to think about which one shoot high, low or in the middle... Although is fun to shoot different types of guns, is more fun to rarely miss a shot. So I am going to limit my gun brands and styles to no more than 2 in different lenghts. Is a matter of going thru the elimination process as to what I like best and what I dislike most. I doubt your Ulusub does not shoot straight, those guns feel and look great. Good luck. |

Re: shooting an enclosed track??
You should be able to sight down the spear and it what youre aiming at. Like aiming a shotgun. The guns that shoot low, they aim off the tip of the spear-which is held at an angle up, and at different ranges, a different angle is used, not very good. That is caused by the gun kicking up, hitting the rear of the spear as it comes out, making it hit low. There are several thoughts of why this is-what causes it, I feel the most important one is the bands must be parrallel to the spear, some wood guns have the band holes low, causing an angle, which is felt as a kick up when the trigger is pulled. They need to be right along the spear the whole way when cocked. Not angling down. On some guns the handle is lower than usual and it is harder to control even kick back, and this can be a cause of some. And some feel that the gun is too light, and lead should be added to prevent this. There is always a kick back, it should be straight back, not up. Get used to the gun you shoot, hopefully all will shoot the same. Do some target practice on a milk jug. Take 2, one fill with sand and water, tie a string to it, and have another floating up from it, just filled with water and maybe a little air. Shoot at several different ranges, and do sight down the spear. Drop down below the surface, lay on the bottom and sight. Try to get where you can hit the same spot repeatedly. At different distances.

Re: shooting an enclosed track??
Hi Mike,
Try shooting with 2 bands first it will be less Explosive.. Figure out your sighting, and then move to three bands. Handle placement has a lot to do with how a gun sights. A Mid Handle will sight much differently from a Rear Handle, a Rear Handle, differently from a Rail gun. If you are going high or low and otherwise on target, you need to find your balance with the position of the handle vs. your sighting. That handle is raised up into the stock, but it is going to be different from a Rail gun where the handle is behind the stock and at the height of the shaft. Similarly, with 3 bands and an 8mm shaft, that's a different beast than a Riffe 110. One, will tickle a wahoo at 20ft, the other will put him on the grill..

Re: shooting an enclosed track??
I think Jon has the best advice here. I got my first ET gun and was great up close with 1 band and kept missing with two. After a half day, dozen shots, I put the second back on got much better with it. I added the third bang a few trips later and now usually only shoot 3 unless the viz is horrible. Just give it time.

Re: shooting an enclosed track??
thanks guys i just have to play with it in the water...! steve thank you what youre saying about recoil and kicking the shaft makes sense...this thing is so fast i couldnt see if i was high or low...and loading all three bands repeatedly is brutal... my sternum needs to get tougher!!! lol jon thanks for the insight...i will make some sort of target to shoot at off the dock here in the icw... and only loading two bands seems much nicer too!! thanks again guys for all the help... i will get it dialed in and start wacking some fish here soon

Re: shooting an enclosed track??
I was missing when i first got an enclosed.. Then i started aiming down a little more and am back on point. x2 on the band advice.. With most of the new guns having maximum band stretch, it makes alot of sense to invest in a rash guard/lyrca with a chest pad
