new custom build

Working a my first build.
Aiming at a reef gun that can still take out something bigger just in case =)
Now testing the cnc machine on MDF laminate.
I don't like the way the muzzle came out. New design on the way.

Re: new custom build

The cnc is not mine so I don’t know the cost.
It’s a professional set up. I’ll make some videos when I run it on the TEAK this week.

Re: new custom build

I wouldn't rush into Teak. Looked like you could make some changes from that original. Sometimes you need to make one run from mdf just to understand the machine.. then start over from total scratch. then run one test from mdf, then teak.

Yes, still running more tests. Made several MDF and Playwood samples.
Moving the mech pocket backward. Band hole forward. Reshaping the muzzle. Making the mid-body thicker. Bands slot in the works.
tks for the comments

Re: new custom build

With the advantage of CAD drawing and CNC routing you could go with less squarish shapes and still get a perfect symetric stock (think Abellan).

I commited to build a CNC router with a friend of mine and we purchased all main material ... say 1,7 grand total... but still have not started. At all.

Re: new custom build

So this was my first build. I was working on that project with a friend. We were both visiting our friend in Baja last novembre and we decided to surprise him with a new gun.
It was a nice learning process.
We decided not to laminate since the Teak seemed to be very nice and dry. Our wood shop guy told us he agreed so we didn't. With our Teak board, we decided to make 6 guns. 50% of the wood once cut got some bend.
We also decided to do enclosed tracks because I think design wise, it looks nicer.. Again, 1st experience with coloured epoxy. In general it was nice but we got a lot of bubbles in some of the tracks. In mine(black track), I think the track was 2 deep and the bubbles on the edges of the track made a really abrasive track and it's cutting the wishbones. We were last minute before the Baja trip. I tested the gun at my lake house and since I was running out of time to re-do de track, I switched to metal cable wishbones from Mako. They were great for that trip but I plan on grinding down the track and re-pour to try to get it right.
I'll need some help on the epoxy mix technique/recipe...
The gun shoot like a lazer. It's great but the final result is not exactly what I was going for. I wanted something similar to a Riffe Euro but ended up with something with way more mass. I wanted more of an agile reef gun but it's more like a mid-blue water gun.
I'm now using 2x 16mm bands wt a 7mm shaft. Stock length is 144cm.
I will make it a 3x bands, 8mm shaft gun for Wahoo that I will leave at my friends house in Baja.
Once done, I'll be back at it for the next reef version.

I've only ever made two guns with fancy colored tracks. I'm not that great at them but a couple things you can try. First one is rather than pouring the entire track in one shot do it in two or three pours (let the epoxy harden in between pours) to cut down on the amount of big bubbles you get. Also, use a small torch to pop any bubbles you see for the first ten minutes or so after pouring your epoxy. just pass it over the bubbles really quickly and they will disappear.

Your guns look great!
