Offshore Gamefish Update: 11/8/19

...The big size Yellowfin are in our waters currently, along with the usual Bluefin suspects...In an area midway between Cortez Bank and SCI on the west, to 5 miles offshore of Pyramid on the east and down to the Mexican border to the south, the fish are schooling on the millions of tiny anchovies...
...A little closer in, there are yellowfin schools in the channel between Catalina and SCI, from the Mackeral Bank down to below the 289/43 banks. With Squid showing on the east end backside of Catalina and yellowtail from Cat Harbor up to the west end, hunting success is pretty much assured if you put in the time to find the fish...
...Santa Barbara island is also worth a look for some of the big yellowtail feeding currently...
...Tip: One way to keep the skittish tuna around is to chop up some chunks of sardines, anchovies or squid and start a chum line on breaking fish or metered fish below your boat....Throwing a few at a time can pull the fish in toward the boat and perhaps, give you the shot of the day on these wary gamefish...A chum holder (PVC pipe with holes drilled in it) hanging over the side can also pull the fish up as they hunt for the source of those tasty morsels..The big sport boats don't chase the fish, they let the fish come to them using a chum line....While small craft can't hold the volume of bait like the big boats, it can still work by constantly throwing a few at a time as you drift or, are anchored on your favorite high spot...
...At the end of the day, start chumming heavily rather than taking baitfish home with you...Often, a last ditch effort pays off...just keep an eye out for those "other" hunters of the deep...
