Pretty crazy it deposited a 10-0 circle hook onto the guys bait bag. (I am wondering if it is originally from a long line in mexico or some would-be shark fisherman)

I've seen makos with little streamers off the back of their dorsal fins. I don't know if all makos have them, but this shark didn't.

It was a mako. Look at the slender snout, like said previously, and the stubby dorsal fin, hence, short fin mako. I know what you're talking about, Bill, they are some kind of parasite and I have seen them without them, as well.

Here are the two videos taken last year of Makos eating sea lions on the backside of Catalina. Separate occurrences.

It's a type of copepod, those strings are actually the eggs. I've seen other kinds on yellowtail and pelagics.

But, when I see the sharp change of colloration from dark grey to white on its side and its size, it makes me think its a small GWS. This video was from only a week or so ago and with all the GWS sightings it just seem very possible to be one. This debate was something I knew would happen since makos, Salmon, and White sharks are all very closely related genes wise and appearance wise.

I think the main thing that matters is that there are very big, very hungry sharks off Catalina Island that are preying on seals (divers too?) and one should be aware of it.

I stand corrected about the copepods, I always thought they were parasites. Either way, I'm pitting my money on it being a big mako. Also, look at the tail on the top half. It doesn't have that little "flap" that that whites have.

At the risk of beating a dead horse, it is of course a mako, no doubt, no further discussion And it makes me happy because something out there other than GWS is eating sea lions!

For reference:

11ft mako C&R last year on 267 bank

Steve Quinlan's 1175lb mako caught on the Redondo Knoll

Re: Catalina Great White Shark attack caught on video!!!

No you are correct, it appears they are parasitic copepods. I don't know anything about the type found on sharks, (I see them on salmon all the time and I have seen them on sheephead and halibut). Google turned up this informative great white copepod parasite video
