Re: First Speargun Build
Ok,
I was able to take the bow out of the blank and I am ready to position the handle and trigger. I am considering not making the first blank a mid handle/rear mechanism gun. I dont have enough material on the butt end for the triger so I may place the handle and trigger up the stock about 10 inches so I can still load this one with my hip and still fire the 55" shaft with some shaft overhang. let me know what you think: First cuts were to even the sides where the overlap of the bottom teak was cut away. I then made a longer fence that would run with the bowed side of the blank resting against it as the saw blade took out the curve I then flipped the blank over to the new straight cut side and made the final squaring cut. Here I am trying to decide if I want to try and make this blank a mid handle or go for the middle handle/trigger like I am use to on my AB Biller. |

Re: First Speargun Build
I think reefgeek wants Prater to make a mid-handle. I would also vote mid-handle - put that extra wood back there to use!

Re: First Speargun Build
I will be doing a mid handle, I was just went into a moment of weakness wanting to get the project done. The weather turned cold again and looks like Ice tomorrow. I may be able to get the routing done this weekend.

Re: First Speargun Build
Just got a little more work done today...
I set the router up for cutting the shaft track. I will be pouring an epoxy track and then routing an enclosed track with the ball end cutter I ordered from Tin Man's thread. I used a 1/8th inch cutter to get the center line of my gun correct and for a shallow test cut. getting a measurement to the centerline of the router bit Setting up the router fence I used featherboards to keep the gun in place as it runs over the bit. I also used blue painters tape to give me a stop point for the track After the test cut with the small bit I measured to see if I was center on the gun. I was out about 15 thousandths but that was close enough for me. I then switched to the 1/2 router bit and made a series of cuts until I was just over 1/2 inch deep. Here is the finsihed cut I will be using the last 2 3/4 inches of the track as a guide for installing the trigger mechanism. I am still trying to figure out what kind of but i will install on the gun also Now the wether has cleared up and I have to get some yard work finished. I am also waiting for my graphite to arrive since I could not find any local. |

Re: First Speargun Build
What kind/brand of epoxy are you pouring for the enclosed track?
Damn, I should have put all these rainy days to better use. It's 65f out right now and I'm looking at a list of Springtime honey-do's. Ripping and laminating teak doesn't seem to be one of the items on the list....... ......guess I'll go Weed & Feed the yard Seriously though, I'm looking into Poseidon Sub (local to Nor-Cal) for the mid-handle trigger mech (and maybe the teak blank) for my next project: Xmas '08 in La Paz Mexico

Re: First Speargun Build
I am using West System Epoxy with microfibers and graphite. I have to wait until I can get a day with temps above 60 degree to pour the track, its hard to heat my three car garage and keep it that warm for the epoxy to set.

Re: First Speargun Build
Looks good so far.
It will be cool seeing the gun finished knowing it was made out of your swim platform. |

Re: First Speargun Build
I was able to get a bit done on lunch today. I set up my Miter and was able to cut the release mechanism pocket. I use a 1/2 chisel mortise bit.
Setting up the mortise bit wioth the router track The pocket after cutting and a bit of cleanup in the corners I switched over to a 1/4 mortise bit and cut through for the trigger and made a pocket for the line release tab to operate I then test fit the mechanism. I will cut the release trigger and notch it for a rod and then get the remote trigger pocket and rod channel cut. |

Re: First Speargun Build
So sweet, I can't wait to see more.
I picked up a little "Mr. Heater" that screws right on my BBQ propane cylinder, and it keeps my 3 car garage (or at least the immediate area I'm working in) pretty warm. http://www.mrheater.com/productdetails.asp?catid=42 Get that damn track poured!!!! edit: turn it off before you start mixing combustable epoxy resin, and ventalate the fumes before firing it back up

Re: First Speargun Build
Track will have to wait until next week. My graphite did not make it in today and I leave in the morning for a liveaboard diving the Channel Islands...
