Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"
This afternoon I did a fruitless recon of the coast from Haskelles to Gaviota- mud and olive water on shore the whole way. Trestls looked the best but shitty with oil visible from the cliff.
Undivable was the call... on the plus side the vis at the Creekside was excellent.... Jeremy |

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"
Yea, things got windy all of a sudden in the outer channel and generated some wind swell, apparently.
Went to front side of Santa Cruz today. Full report here: http://www.spearboard.com/showthread...91#post1202091 Viz was so-so, about 20' at best, but it was spotty. Before the sun came out the viz was pretty poor, but once it came out things got a lot better Unfortunately that wasn't until about 2:30!). Light surge, light current, but a lot of crap suspended in the water - not sure what it was. Up in tight to the island the viz was better, but as soon as you got outside protected coves or nooks, the viz got poor very quickly. Water coming back across the channel was pretty whipped up; in fact we could not drive home sitting on the flybridge of the 37' Tollycraft because the spray kept coming up over the wind screen and drenching us. |

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"
I'm currently sitting on the dredge Essayons in humboldt, but I promise I'll have a report within hours of getting home in two months. By the sound of it being home wouldn't be much better, except at home I'm not 50 feet from shore in prime abalone country...

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"
Conditions out at Santa Cruz were really good, it cleared up quite nicely. Wind was calm, big tidal swing but all in all it was good, lots of bait too. I would get in the water soon, the wind is suppose to start blowing tomorrow and it's suppose to be nasty by Thursday and mix it all up again. Good luck everyone.

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"
Had an AWSOME afternoon in the water today!!
got out at about 2:30 in goleta and was instantly super discouraged as i couldnt see my hand infront of my face. so said to my buddy lets head over to the south end of the kelp bed. got there and it was marginaly better so finally said lets head towards the opposite side of the bed (all well swimming as it was a shore dive, got there and it instantly opened up to about 20ft!!!! On top of that the area was PACKED with life! tons bait as well as calicos, perch, rock fish, opal eye and all the other usual reef dwellers... held out for a while looking for a ghost but no luck.. so took a few very nice sized calicos and called it a day! all-in-all my best coastal dive of the year so far. really great to see it like that again, it reminded me why i love this sport so much! |

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"
I tried to get in at 1000 steps and Ledbetter last night and then again this morning. Too much wind, too much swell, not enough viz. The usual. So I decided to try some rough water driving in the boat. Got some good video of plowing through some 7-8' breaking white caps
