If it Sounds Too Gooood to be True....
If you get invited to jump in at the 14 mile bank by some "helpful" fisherguy, just know that a 15 ' great white has been hanging out there the last 3 days....some dorado on nearby paddies, a few hammerheads to 8' and occasional yt...San Clemente island has bluefin within spitting distance of the east end....good choice of variety up by West Cove, including wsb and big rockfish....several free divers at Ship Rock are new members of the Great White Social Club....One was buzzed up close by a large gw..They quickly exited and after a while, believing it had moved on, jumped back in...tactical mistake....instant return up close again...any name brand recommendations for marine 12 volt batteries based on longevity?..my group 27 Costco Interstate batteries gave out after 2 years....
Moral: Pucker me once, shame on you; pucker me twice, shame on me.... Last edited by Bob Ballew; 08-01-2018 at 12:10 AM. |

Re: If it Sounds Too Gooood to be True....
Just installed two Optima marine batteries in my boat. One cranking and one dual purpose. $275 a piece. They were highly recommended by boat owner friends as well as the sales rep.

Funny. I was going to jump in at Ships rock last night at about 5pmish. Too much current and wind and waves with a newbie in tow. Seems like we made the right call.

Re: If it Sounds Too Gooood to be True....
...No one has discussed why sticking around was a tactical error???....New divers; pay attention.....Great whites aren't there for the small bait or the occasional gamefish that show up around reef areas...key: was the presence of seals or sea lions that provide more energy with less chasing.....my encounter with a 15 footer occurred at Church Rock with a seal rookery established on the beach by the rock...It was harpooned the next day by a swordfish boat passing by, as it was chasing a seal across the surface...It took all their floats and line, requiring 5 hours to bring up and kill.... F&G personnel cut it open and found 300 lbs of seal meat in it's stomach. I was very lucky, as there was no doubt it intended to make a meal of me...The kelp bed around Church saved my ass.....That GW weighed in at 2800 lbs..
Moral: move 5 miles away to another kelp bed and stay skinny. so you don't look like a plump pinniped..... Last edited by Bob Ballew; 08-05-2018 at 09:38 AM. |

Those things don't want to eat a toothpick like you dude get over it. You're not even in their food chain...

Re: If it Sounds Too Gooood to be True....
Well, after you have your first encounter...Then, and only then....will you be qualified to tell us about how we aren't in the food chain....tell that to Al Schneppershoff's family, a dive buddy of mine who was killed by a great white, or, try explaining that half-assed theory to Harry Ingram, who missed becoming a meal by mere inches and ended up on top of a 15'er's head...... I speak from 55 years of real life experience, not some textbook theory.....hopefully, the new guys will pay attention and avoid diving near seal areas...…..and, my name isn't "dude"....

Re: If it Sounds Too Gooood to be True....
...The benefit of a nearby kelp bed is you can take cover and quietly blend in with the kelp canopy. As far as the theory that big sharks won't go into a kelp bed...wrong....like everything in life, there are exceptions.... if the stalks near the bottom are spread apart, a big shark may cruise thru, usually near the bottom where there is more open area. In that case, you just want to hang quietly in the top surface layer and perhaps, pull some fronds around you to break up your shape...
...On the back side of Catalina, Al Schneppershoff had a big hammerhead go under him inside a kelp bed, threading it's way thru the stalks near the bottom...He said that it looked to be about a 14'er...At Palos Verdes, Gary Thompson had just climbed aboard his sea urchin boat anchored inside a bed, when he observed a large shark pass under the kelp by his boat. He was pretty certain it was a great white...So, the lesson is to keep a sharp eye around you at all times when spearfishing. On the positive side, the odds of an encounter are in your favor....Most CA divers never encounter a "big" shark in their lifetime... Last edited by Bob Ballew; 08-08-2018 at 05:21 PM. |

Other than that, I call BS on that statement. But it would make a Great Poll...of all the members here on this board...how many have Never seen a shark? Read your statement again, Most, Never, Lifetime! |

Re: If it Sounds Too Gooood to be True....
Call b.s. all you want, but, we are talking about big sharks that can do you in, not the paltry bull sharks hanging off every beach in Florida....Most of my diving friends have never encountered a big shark during their diving careers, whether commercial or sport diving.....true, most CA divers see leopard sharks, horned sharks and an occasional soupfin, but, they don't pose any threat...My statement is about encountering the jumbo size stuff, like makos and great whites;, and, perhaps a big hammerhead during warm water years...But, times are changing and more great whites are showing up in our waters, hence, the need for new guys to learn where not to dive and what to do if it happens...and, that is not b.s.….
To correct the error of my ways, I have most humbly changed my statement to cover CA and "big".... |
