Re: Who went out for Hogfish, any thoughts???
At least it wasn’t full of roe. It’s a shame that grouper is closed for 4 months so they can spawn only to have them get killed when they’re basically 9 months pregnant

Re: Who went out for Hogfish, any thoughts???
I finally got to go out for hogs this past weekend and I must say that I was impressed with the quality of hogfish that I saw. I was one of the people that were against the new rule and now I’m kinda for it. Between three of us we shot a 20” and two 24” fish. There was more meat on those three fish than ther would have been on 10 12” fish.

Pretty sure grouper release their eggs during spawning, and the sperm in the water fertilize the already-released eggs. So one that was full of eggs wouldn't have spawned yet, and wouldnt that be fairly abberant or localized?

I shoot a lot of grouper. After gutting hundreds of Black Grouper in the past 6 weeks I would say about 60-70% of the females had roe in them in May, and many still had roe until the end of the first week of June. This was observed on a 70 mile tract.

So that info would mean that the grouper closure is happening too early by you.

I just think that they should move back the opening day of Grouper season by 2 weeks or something, maybe even base it off of moon phases? Maybe give 2 weeks back in January and take 2 weeks in may? The problem with that is that some scientist would have to admit that they didn’t know exactly what they were doing when they implemented this amendment they just thought the first of the month was conveient date for a new holiday. From what I’ve read, it seems that most of the studies on grouper spawning has been done in Belieze, Gladden spit I’m pretty sure? Lol MOTE published an article in 2016 about how they identified the first black grouper spawning site in the US even though commercial fisherman could have told you that in the 1970s. The grouper closure has definitely helped grouper population, I just think it could go a step further to make the 4 month wait worth its while.
