Slip/detachable flopper modification.

Hi, I remember seeing a flopper modification commercially available a year or two ago; the flopper hole in a normal shaft was replaced with a pin extending out slightly on opposite sides of the shaft. The flopper was setup to detach/held by spectra and act as a slip-tip on impact with fish.

Has anyone used this? Thoughts? Where can I find one?

I’m on Oahu and and will be targeting Ono.

It's called a kimera slip tip. Not sure if your LDS has them but you can order them on line. I got mine at Spearamerica.

It seems you can order directly from Kimera, too:

Diver278/Gecko,

Thanks! I couldn’t remember the name and my google descriptive search terms were coming up dry.

Mahalo,

How has it worked for you? I like the idea, but I haven't been able to find much feedback on them.

Re: Slip/detachable flopper modification.

I’ve only shot one fish with one so far. It worked excellent. Deployed right away and made it next to impossible for the fish to get away. I am still concerned with their strength compared to a mori. The little welds the line attaches to looks really small and I’d imagine the weak link of the system.

Ya, I don't think I would use it instead of a conventional slip tip when specifically hunting yt/wsb or pelagics. I just hate when I'm holding both shafts at the trunk of my car getting ready for a shore dive and weighing the pros vs cons of destroying my slip tip on a reef fish in a hole or losing a wayward yt/wsb that comes by while I'm reef hunting.

Re: Slip/detachable flopper modification.

If the hooks get bent or distorted then it (the flopper) will not lie flat on the shaft.

Re: Slip/detachable flopper modification.

They work, but there's definitely some areas they can improve on. I've only used them on large calicos, sheephead, small red snapper, and parrotfish. Still waiting to test them on some YT and WSB

If you want your order quickly, try SpearAmerica who stocks them. Kimera's customer service and shipping dept. aren't quick or very responsive.

Pros:
- Deploys as advertised
- Turns your rock tip into a slip tip

Cons:
- Pins often don't fit the shaft you've ordered it for (plan on using some superglue/epoxy they include)
- Included spectra is poor quality and frays quickly
- Falls off regularly
- Larger entry and exit holes
- Use a couple shaft wraps of electrical tape to keep the ring from getting wedged down on the shaft and any sharkfins

Re: Slip/detachable flopper modification.

I would recommend this slip tip but it requires modifications after purchase to work well. I removed the horrible spectra it comes with and replaced it with stiff spectra. You need to make sure your crimped loop is long enough that the crimp is not on the flopper as it increase the falling off issue. Additionally it really helps to use two rubber o rings or bands to hold the stiff spectra to the shaft to reduce the flopper falling off in drops and swinging. I have been using a flopper pin bent into a slight crescent to hold the flopper in place of the tube it comes with.

It’s been working well now that I’ve done all that but out of package it was really not pleasant to use due to the obnoxious fraying and it’s desire to fall off constantly.

Re: Slip/detachable flopper modification.

To prevent it from falling off you tuck the dyneema under the bands just like a traditional slip tip. I also recommend replacing the dyneema it comes with.

Re: Slip/detachable flopper modification.

Accurate just like a flopper. That’s one of the big perks.
