Ocean cove jellyfish

Anyone know what kind of jellyfish those were? They were all over the place and my son wanted to know if they could sting?

Re: Ocean cove jellyfish

we called them half moon jellyfish but I have no idea if that is correct. as a kid i used to pick them up all the time and play with them and was never stung. my brother did not report being stung when I threw them at him either.

The clear ones are moon jellies, the dark purple ones are something else. The moon jellies are harmless, but I think the purple guys can sting.

If they are the little purple sailors on the beach, they are Velella's. Related to the Man-O-War. A hydrozoan. Not really a jelly. But close enough. They won't bother you. Is that what you are talking about. They would float on the surface.

Those things were every where this weekend, and about 8"-10" around . Not sure what kind those are, but the only time I've ever been stung by a jelly (or hydrozoan, or whatever else) was diving in the Philippines. It wasn't very fun, believe me.....

We get some nasty brown ones up here in Oregon that can sting.

Like rich said, these were 8-10" and brown and some had up to a couple feet of what would be stinging tentacles on other jellies although most of them seemed to have lost most or all of these "tentacles".

Sounds like you might be talking about Sea Nettles, as so well photographed by Justin here.

The ones I've seen lately are pretty chewed up and small blue rockfish are going at them.

Re: Ocean cove jellyfish

I saw about 3 of the sea nettles that were chewed up real bad but there were a tone of the white half moons in O/C on saturday. I was out at fort ross one time and watched a school of blues shred about 20 of the half moons. each jelly was surrounded by five or six blues which were taking chunks out of them like they were candy.
