lure tape for spearfishing

i know the topic has been discussed a bit, but i couldn't find a thread discussing tape that had any substantial information in it.

i'm interested in getting some shiny tape on my carbon fiber fins. i've read online that if you aren't selective with the tape you choose it can be easy for the tape to fall off or not hold up. i've also read that some people have problems keeping tape on carbon fiber fins.

does anyone out there have a solid brand for tape that will hold up under water, not come off, and will remain shiny?

if not, does anyone have any tricks to fixing any of these issues? super glue to keep the stickers on? double-layering the stickers in case the top layer wears down or doesn't remain shiny?

are there any alternatives that work as well as lure tape?

any and all information is appreciated.

Mako carries the tape as well as most tackle shops. You might have to ask a few people because many times the "know it all's" at the store might not....know what it is.

No need for gluing it down, its adhesive is plenty strong. Super glue is not a good choice for tape because its permanent while the tape is not. No need to double it up either, as most tape lasts for years, and has a clear protective coating on it already. If you cant get ahold of any I think I have about 4 or 5 feet left. Make sure if you put them on your fins to put it on the tops and not the bottoms or when you are on the surface youll have birds dive bombing your fins because of the shine.

Re: lure tape for spearfishing

thanks for the quick reply. i'm a big fan of Mako and their gear (own a belt and an oceanic pro myself) but i read online that their tape wore down quickly and that the adhesive on it came off fairly easily.

have you had any experience with their tape yourself? i'd like to believe that it was just a bad batch or that the error in the product has been fixed (and from what i've heard of Dano, it probably has been fixed if there were any previous issues with it).

I personally have not, I went to a marine supply store and of the 10 people that worked there 2 knew what it was and 1(the owner) was able to find it....I just called the boyds bait and tackle in lauderdale and they said they have several types/colors in stock. Swing by there and check it out. They dont open till 1130 tho. Im sure bass pro would have something like that as well.

I use aluminum duct tape from home depot to make flashers. the adhesive is very strong I'm sure it will hold up great on fins.. and you can cut them in the shape of fish if you like.

What's the thought process on putting flashers on fins? Are they intended as traditional flashers? Do they spook fish that you wouldn't target with flashers?

I like the idea of being able to spot my buddy much easier.

Re: lure tape for spearfishing

Ive used the Reflixile brand tape on my finds for almost 3 years now, and besides from the areas where i've scraped them against the bottom or rocks, its stayed on really well. I have them cut into small little pieces and taped all over my fins. The macks both king and cero LOVE it and come in to investigate all the time. Oh and also the cuda love following me around the wrecks lol.

Here's a pic on how I have them on my fins
