Re: kelp cutter on outboard lower drive?
nice looking designs but, your prop will still take damate on the outside edges from hitting kelp with snails...you still have to have enough speed to slice thru the kelp and the snails will put little chips in the blades, eventually requiring repair and rebalancing of the prop after going thru kelp beds fast....also bad for your raw water intake, as they tend to suck up the stringy pieces of grass mixed in with kelp beds and cause engine overheating...better to stay out of kelp beds if you can....

Re: kelp cutter on outboard lower drive?
Man talk about a reminder of one more thing to do before June.
Yours looks good Larry. Is your middle brace welded or just a wedge for support? One of the things we were considering was when sharpening the cutter, to make the edge wavy. Kinda like a softly serrated knife, so that the kelp would cut easier when moving slow. |

Yes, that is what we did on mine.. It has like a very sharp serrated cut on it. Very shape, just touching it and you can cut your self.. As for the one on the honda it is just like a steak knife, very sharp too. Joe had one made and it didn't have the braces and it bent up while he was takening a sharp turn. I wanted to put up some example of the ones we us up here in the channel islands. As you can see I have two braces weldened on and the keel is wedge in to the blade. Also the thread is a year old, but if you do a google search for kelp cutter this is the only one that shows up with any pictures. So I hope this helps anyone that needs one.. Larry

Re: kelp cutter on outboard lower drive?
If you start cutting through a large kelp bed make sure there are no divers in there.... That would be a tough way yo go.
Thanks for the pics Larry. |

Re: kelp cutter on outboard lower drive?
I'm thinking I could use one of these things, but does anyone know what they do to your gas mileage? That extra stuff has to add some drag.

I usually get around 3 mpg before, and Im getting the same. One big diffrance is that I don't get caught up in the kelp anymore, and I have not heard the over heat warning on my outboard since I installed it. When thought the PV kelp like it was not even there. Up here in ventura most of the boat have them. Really cool to lum it and not get caught in kelp or have to reverse my motor to clear the prop.. Re: kelp cutter on outboard lower drive?
I had one on my 24' commercial Radon...accidently hit a blue shark with it and sliced him in two pieces with no damage to my prop or outdrive...mine had a v welded to both the top and bottom, bolted onto the outdrive...

Re: kelp cutter on outboard lower drive?
Didn't take any pics of it..but it was a straight blade about 12" long with a v shaped tang welded on at each end with the bottom 4" tapered back like a knife blade...
