Re: Freshwater Nationals

I went there for the weekend of July 4th (included Open Day). July 1-4.

Even the water seems clear from the beach shore, the visibility is still limited (2-4 ft) within 5 ft depth. The visibility increases as you dive deeper. I dove to 30 ft and see up to 10 ft.

After first three days, the walleyes get smarter but plenty of walleyes everywhere anyway. During my trip there, we went through two crazy howling thunderstorms with hails (with tornado warning). Many tents got busted and blew off. The anchors did not hold the boat or jetski very well in the bay. So prepare your tents and your anchors precisely, in case, the thunderstorm comes by overnight. I am thankful that the wind knocked the tree down into right direction (only few feet away from my truck being smashed).

Biggest walleye I speared is 29 inches. I averagely landed 18-19 inches walleyes (I skipped countless legit walleyes for bigger walleyes) and I got limited everyday. I have spotted 10 lbs freshwater drum (most are within 3-5 lbs) and 2-4 lbs white suckers. There are three kind of black basses I spotted (smallmouth, spotted, and largemouth). Most of them are smallmouth).

You still can win the tournament without boat. I did it once by drove my truck around the lake and shoredove. The water temp was 70. I wore 3 mm. I normally wear 5mm top and 3mm bottom.

Good luck to everybody. I will be on my way to Eleuthera, Bahamas.

Re: Freshwater Nationals

Great report Matthew. I've never seen drum in there, interesting. I noticed you didn't mention pike , catfish, or wiper. A few years ago seems this this fish were everywhere

Re: Freshwater Nationals

Mike,

The fish species I saw during the weekend of July 1-4:

Channel Catfish (speared four)
White Bass
Panfish
Yellow Perch
Smallmouth Bass (finger poked)
Spotted Bass
Largemouth Bass
Northern Pike
Freshwater Drum (speared 10 lbs one)
White Sucker (speared 4.2 lbs)
Quillback Sucker (finger poked)
Shorthead Redhorse Sucker (finger poked)
Shad/Minnow (plenty of schools swam by daily, at least four times a day at where I dove)
Walleye (limited daily for both speared and finger poked)
Common Carp (finger poked several)
Rainbow Trout (first time I ever saw it at Big Mac Lake).

I have not seen wiper but I have seen wiper boils in early morning (5:30 am) and late evening (8 pm).

Finger poked is my own challenge to touch fish without spearing them.
