As for the motor, each inflatable will have the max hp rating on the transom. The size of the motor will depend a lot on the size of the inflatable. I had a Zodiac Mark II that was 13.5" long and was rated for 40hp. But I had a 25hp Johnson on it and it worked perfectly for my needs. With 3 guys and gear (freedive), it would easily go 15-20mph on a calm day over in Monterey. With 3 guys and scuba gear, it went about 10mph. Getting up on plane was not so fast either.

For freediving, a 10' to 12' would be fine, with a 15hp to 25hp motor will be perfect. Anything larger will be over-kill, unless you want to pay the extra for an engine that will make you go faster. You want an engine that will, at a minimum, get you up on plane with whatever amount of weight you will have in the boat, or it will be a very slow ride out to your location.

This is just my personal opinion, from my personal experience. This is a pic of my old Zodiac while diving in Mexico.
Hey Bryan, when did you start wearing a speedo on your head??? Is that a "what happens in Mexico stays in Mexico" kinda thing...

Ron,

What are you talking about? Have you been smokin' crack again? How many times have I told you that when you confiscate a suspects drugs, you need to book into "evidence", and not hold for "further testing."

You know I still love ya? And yes. The hali in my avatar is my newest one taken last month at Santa Cruz Island. Not really big, but a nice one at 22lbs that made some nice fillets.

Re: canoe diving?

I have a 15' canoe and I can get in and out very easily. Probably much better than from a kayak. BUT, you have to make sure you have more than enough flotation built in the canoe. My canoe is 42" wide so quite hard to flip over. I have never come close but then again I watch the waves I get out in. I haven't been scuba in a canoe but getting in and out is very easy for me.

You bring up some good points. As an example, when I had my old Coleman canoe, it had enough floatation that it wouldn't sink, but once it was swamped, it sat too far into the water to bail or pump out. The only option was to swim it to shore. Not conduive to diving, especially in the ocean. On the other hand, a good whitewater canoe is outfitted with enough floatation to eskimo roll without swamping.

I guess a canoe with some extra floatation and maybe an outrigger setup using paddle floats or something could be made diver friendly...
Ron.

Re: canoe diving?

Being that I use a trolling motor (bad back) I have a battery already so an automatic bilge pump will keep you very dry.
