How to file shaft grooves?

Can anyone recommend what to use to file down the grooves on a notched shaft? Was just going to go to home depot but they might not know what I'm talking about. Anyway, what do you folks use to smooth out the edges of the notches? Thanks in advance.

I usually use a needle file to clean things up. You can use a rotory tool (dremel) too if you're careful.... wear safety glasses.

Do you want to MAKE new notches or smooth existing ones out?

Re: How to file shaft grooves?

If you have a pneumatic cut off wheel you can do it very carefully, I think a dremel will work, I've used a small round file, emery cloth will also help.

I've even taken a piece of scrap stainless steel braided wire and wrapped it around two handles and run it back and forth across the notch.

Put the Shaft into a Vice. Use a small file to dull the center of the cut. Then take a roll of Indstrial Strength Belt Sander Sand Paper, cut some 1/4" tabs, pull off a strip of 1/4" that is about 1' long.. start sanding for the sides of the cut.

Re: How to file shaft grooves?

I picked up a small set of files at Harbor Freight a few years back that make the job really easy. Cost around $10 for a set of 12 files of various shapes. I use the files to get the rounded shape I want, then finish it off with strips of emery cloth. Oh, and I have a little vice that I padded the jaws with leather. Holds the spear nicely without scratching it up.

A needle file to take the rough edge off, then Mitchell's Abrasive Cord. It's sandpaper on a string, and is available in lots of diameters and grits from Amazon, Rockler, etc. It's one of those goofy little products that is surprisingly handy to have around sometimes.

Re: How to file shaft grooves?

Have you considered "pinning" the shaft? Minor cost to have a good shop do it (assuming you have one in your area). First choice IMO.

Re: How to file shaft grooves?

Sorry, I guess not really an option unless you're also willing to convert to an open muzzle. Your fix is the easiest way, but I still prefer an open muzzle and tabbed or pinned shafts.

Re: How to file shaft grooves?

thanks a lot guys! got a set of needle files from home depot. asked a worker to point me in the direction of emery cloth but then didn't see it and was too shame to ask for it. tinman- thanks for the tip on the abrasive cord. will pick up a roll soon!
