Re: eating stingray
If you have to beat the hell out of it and soak it in milk for 24hrs to change the taste of it, then why the hell would you even bother eating it?

If you cut the wings off the ray and ice good, you really don't need to soak in milk...certainly no reason you need to tenderize it.

Re: eating stingray
You are all complete morons, everything you have said in the thread above has made me and anyone else who reads it signifigantly dumber, and may God have mercy on your pathetic souls! Just joshin' ya!
No but seriously... I've never had sting ray before, but there is a restraunt called SunFish Grille in Ft. Lauderdale. Had dinner there on Tuesday and I tried thier Skate Wing appetizer. It was delicious. Nice lemon butter sauce with capers. No idea how it would compare to ray wing, but it really was good. |

Re: eating stingray
this is an interesting thread. there seems to be two very distinct, very opposite opinions, on a pretty narrow subject. i don't know how subjective this topic could be, it either tastes good, is edible, or sucks.
the meat i got off the fresh ray didn't look at all like the meat in KEYSKILLER's link. it was very white. it was also very fresh though. i think i am going to have to get ahold of some more stingray to do a some experimenting in the kitchen. |

Re: eating stingray
I shot my first this summer with a gun after missing a few with bowfishing gear, I'd been wanting to try them out too! There is a lot more written about safely bowfishing for them than spearfishing, but with mine I just swam it back to the boat, hauled it's head out of the water and then brained it with my knife before bringing it the rest of the way on board. Once on board, I put a weight belt on the tail to prevent it from whipping around and cut the muscles on either side above the stinger (see the pic, had read about this technique).
The meat is very good, I was hoping it would taste like scallops but alas it does not. It does have a rubbery look BEFORE cooking, but after cooking the texture is very similar to any other fish. When I first would throw a piece on the grill it would SMELL kind of like scallops while cooking, but the similarities end there. My girlfriend actually loved it and wants me to shoot another one. I never did any tenderizing, just marinated and grilled or battered it up and fried it like anything else. You do get a LOT more meat off them than you would think for their size- they look so flat but are actually pretty thick in the middle! |

Re: eating stingray
Yeah but I'd pull his head over the rail and bonk him or stab him a couple times before you get that tail in the boat.... better safe than sorry!

Re: eating stingray
No it does, I'd just shoot it and not pull it up close to you until you're back in the boat!!

Re: eating stingray
Yes and no. It will whip around all crazy out of water. Underwater though they can whip it up to defend themselves.
