Boating questions- what would you ask?

When my daddy passed away 3 months ago he left a boat to my mom and sister. The boat is named after my mom actually.
But neither my mom nor my sister have ever boated without my dad so they are both struggling with using the boat at all since they feel they have too much to learn before being comfortable boating safely. Since my husband and I have been boating for decades, my sister suggest I put together a webinar series for new boaters that teaches the basics, things like how to back the trailer, how to hook up the trailer, navigation, right of way, weather, what does that beeping sound mean and what do i do about it and lots more. Navionics is going to help sponsor this series so it will be completely free to webinar attendees.
For your new boaters out there, what questions do you need answered? For you seasoned boaters, what do you wish someone had taught you when you were a newbie?

Throw in something about having an epirb or plb going offshore!

Basics of vhf radio use.

Water color / depth

Required safety equipment / coast guard inspections (trailer straps?)

Sorry to hear about your dad.

Re: Boating questions- what would you ask?

Develop a specific checklist for your boat all the items from hooking up trailer: safety chains, hitch safety pin in, lights (do they work?), bearings greased, tire lugs tight, inspect tires, transom tie down straps, winch locked, jack up, no loose gear or secured in boat, tailgate up, brakes connected (if used), ball pin locked/secured, spare, jack, fire extinguisher, lug wrench, First Aid kit (tow vehicle & boat).

Weather check.

Boat to launch: unhook trailer lights, plug in. transom straps off, safety gear in boat: horn/whistle, compass, gps, epirb, (are their batteries okay?), plug in, charts, PFD's, throw-able, baling cup & sponge, mirror if skiing/tubing; fuel, battery/electrical, bilge pump working?, running lights check, plug in, motor jacks off, sunscreen, hats, water, plug in, mirror, flares, radio, plug in, float plan filed, phone charger brick, plug in, phone, motor turns over, plug in. Comm check

Boat for recovery: winch strap prepped and winch unlocked, lower bimini, rods (&weights) secured, raise motor, turn it off, lock motor, plug out, rinse bilge if needed for Zebra Mussels, motor up-off-locked, transom straps secured, winch secured, lights connected and checked, inspect chains & hitch locks/components, motor up-off-locked, loose gear secured, properly dispose of trash and any fish cleanings. Check mirrors. Motor-up-off-locked. Key off. 360' walk. Key off. Is the motor up & off?

Underway: Check bilge (got water?), is the plug in, motor running smooth. gps start plot, 360' check, check weather, pfd's out & on?, launch/dock lines aboard?, everyone on board?, motor running smooth? Fuel level check.

Needless to say some things are worth double and triple checking.
