How do you fill out the abalone card?

- I fill the bottom tags before the top table. When I fill the report card from the top down, I find the tags usualy get wet from my wet elbow and palm.

- Try not to hang my head over the tags. Wet hair/hood drips drips water on the form, and it makes it really hard to write.

- When the pen doesn't work, it helps to make random strokes at the back, or on the instruction card.

- Keep a paper towel in the dry box, I usually end up using it to dry the report card.

Any more tips?

Re: How do you fill out the abalone card?

Dry box, or clear(ish) Nalgene bottle from REI like the one below. 2 or 3 fine point Sharpies (in case 1 craps out on you). Pre-cut the holes in the tags, and get the tiniest zip-ties you can find at Home Depot (4" x 3/32").

I hear the tags are better this year with more room to write the date and location codes. Last years (the 1st year of tagging) were crap!! I don't know about a towel, and never needed one, but usually I strip off the hood and top and chill a minute before tagging. A sharp dive knife comes in handy for cutting the tags off the card because they don't always tear in the right place

Dude.

What happened to using your teeth???
Thats how hardcore trophy abalone divers do it.
lol

I use a water bottle with a screw on top. I have 2 pens, my license, and my ab card in there. When I get to shore I usually take a 10-15 minute break and then start filling out that annoying card.

you might want to be careful about taking a 10-15 minute break, unless you were kidding about that.
If you sit there for that long, it might not be a problem, but if you get up and move around, and theyre watching, they most likely will tag you.
Law says " immediately upon exiting ", so be careful about that.

also, I use a hole punch to do the tag hole, instead of messing with the chads, and if you tear it, its easy to punch another one. pipe cleaners work well to attach, and are easier to use than zip ties.

Get a Fischer space pen. It writes the BEST of any of the pens, will write in water , upside down in space and up to like 10,000 degrees F.
Available at Staples, online or sometimes at REI.

I always plant my arse onto a rock and relax a little, then start filling them out. I never knew that I could be fined for that

Damn, that would be an ass-hat of a Ranger if he gave me a ticket for relaxing a bit.

They seem to be a little better this year. The holes are more completely punched out and there is more room on them.

I'm like a lot of the rest of you. I keep everything in a Nalgene bottle. If you go to Harbor Freight or one of those other cheap tool stores you can get a big tube of zip ties cheap. You will have enough little zip ties that you most likely won't ever have to buy them again.

Helps to bring a small piece of towel to dry off your hands before filling out the card...

Re: How do you fill out the abalone card?

here is a little trick you may want to try.. If you dove in a protected area and the water is calm enough, pull your mask, fins, gloves, and the top of your wetsuit off while your sitting on a wash rock with your feet still in the water! That way you can walk right over to your stuff wrap a towel arround your self and be dry and ready to fill out your card, and not violate the "immediatly upon exiting the water" clause... Just my little trick. Best of luck and a safe season to all!
