All About Pole Spears & Slings What is it about that traditional method of the early hunter/gatherers under the water? These devices are indeed interesting and effective. |

Re: JBL Pole Spear Modification
Rudyc,
Meant to ask before.. What knot did you use to "crimp" the tubing? and did you just knot the string that you inserted inside the tubing? -geofri |

Re: JBL Pole Spear Modification
geofri,
That one looks great. I used a double constrictor knot for the bands. I knotted the cord, lubed it up with dish detergent and stuffed them in the rubber. Then tied them off with a double constrictor knot. rudyc |

Re: JBL Pole Spear Modification
Oh cool. Constrictor is my favorite knot. Don't know how to tie a double though, I'll have to look that one up!

Re: JBL Pole Spear Modification
So is anyone making these? I know this is an older thread but looking to change the band on my 6' JBL spear pole to a simpler and easier to change design. If anyone is making these please let me know. I am also not sure if you need a tap to thread the inside of the pole.

Re: JBL Pole Spear Modification
You can wait around for someone to make them or you could drill a hole in the existing plug, chamfer the rough edges and tie in your band with some 1/2" diameter latex at 300% stretch ratio, add a 12" extension, and realize the full potential of your JBL pole spear.

Re: JBL Pole Spear Modification
You guys are making it way more work than it needs to be and adding a new fail point in the process . Unless its cross pinned that plug could pull out when fighting a fish .
It can be like this Phil |

Re: JBL Pole Spear Modification
Phil,
Post a few more pics please. The problem I am seeing is the older version has a plug and the newer version Like I have is a solid shaft with one hole. |

Re: JBL Pole Spear Modification
I have an extra one laying around. I put two dimples on the end where it goes into the spear, and after epoxying and inserting you stake the spots over the dimples on the adapter. This is similar to how JBL does it.
I use 680 bearing retainer without staking and you will not get it off unless heated. I recommend a 5min epoxy and stake and your ready to spear in under 10min. Looks like JBL took some good advice from someone and their new "shaka" spear has these type of rears on the spear.
