Re: Bull Shark attacked us.... News gets details wrong
That Bull needs to be hung up somewhere for the fly's. Before anyone starts flaming me about "That his ocean" and "Sharks were here before us" blah blah blah. Obviously he's learned to associate the sound of a speargun with food which is in my opinion no different than a bear at a dump. As much as I love the ocean, I love my fellow man better and an agressive animal like that needs a PH upside the noggin
That said, I hope the kid makes a physical and mental recovery. I have a son that is 14 too and I shudder to think.

Wyoming guide
Even though it is true that a lot of bullsharks, sharks in general. They have learned to associate the sound of a gun with easy food. It was not the case in this case. The guys were in the bahamas were the use of a peargun is against the law. They were either shooting with a sling or a polespear. |

Re: Bull Shark attacked us.... News gets details wrong
Little update.
Derek is doing great so far. Wound hasn't been stiched shut because they want to prevent any chance of internal infection. His achillies tendon was cut 95% of the way through near the ankle and had two smaller lacerations proximally. These were repaired well in surgery. they also repaired two tendons on his lateral anlke. He had 16 lacerations on the front of his leg as well.. some of them exposing tendons. Most of these were not stiched shut either. Derek looked great this afternoon at the hospital and was surrounded by family and friends. He was up and down with his crutches many times... what a tough kid |

Re: Bull Shark attacked us.... News gets details wrong
Matt that is awesome news. I am glad he is doing so great.
Freedom 7 is the latest model of shark shield. (www.sharkshield.com) I know many divers that love them and swear by them. It puts off an electric shark deterrant that is good to like 10-12 feet. Usually sharks will turn when they hit it but not always, if they are fired up enough they will push through it. Do a search on here and you will find a ton of info on people's first hand experiences. |

Re: Bull Shark attacked us.... News gets details wrong
As said above, you saved his life!
Like Rob said, a Freedom 7 is a model of a Shark Shield. You attach it to your ankle with a strong velcro strap. Then, there is a 6 ft whip that travels behind you. The whip sends out electrical impulses which annoy the sharks. I don't turn my on until I've shot a fish. If I float the fish, I turn it off. And they work. I had an experience myself proving it works and a dear fellow LGD just recently got to test her's - and it worked! Retail cost is around $700, I believe. The SS and my pony bottle are my dive buddies. We get laughed at on dive boats, but I won't dive Jupiter without the them. Oh, and don't accidently grab the end of the whip or poke your buddy with it - that's just wrong... Here's a link to explain it better. http://www.marinedirect.com.au/catalogue/c2432/

Re: Bull Shark attacked us.... News gets details wrong
Like Rob and Em said, Freedom 7 is one of the more popular Shark Shields. I have one. It has a long whip, which I thread through my Fin (good thing or I would have lost it by now because the velcro doesnt always hold) and straps to your ankle, the whip, sends out an electric current to the Sharks once turned on, which should be done upon entering the water if you are spearing fish. The Sharks bounce off the current and away from you. For some reason, Nurse sharks are immune from the S Shield, but I can deal with that They run between $600-$900, but money well spent. Just make sure you dont hit anyone beneath you with it, Ive come up under one and got a pretty decent shock to my head! And altought it hasnt happened to me "yet", like Rob said, there are no guarantees a Shark will not pierce the Shield..... Spearit

Re: Bull Shark attacked us.... News gets details wrong
A buddy of mine was using a Freedom 7 last year in the Dry Tortugas. He had no problem with sharks so they must be pretty effective. However if you swim over your dive partner and the cable drags between the other guys legs and catches him in the privates you might have a problem almost as bad as a shark. BTW if you stick it in a lobster hole the bugs come flying out.
