All About Pole Spears & Slings What is it about that traditional method of the early hunter/gatherers under the water? These devices are indeed interesting and effective.

3 prongin'

Saturday was perfect summer weather in Auckland, so we headed out on the launch with the whole family including grandparents to help the kids fishing etc. For the keen hunters out there, you might like my short video of my son's 'wallaby hunt'

I had a chance to do some 3 pronging with my Gat-ku. A local spot at kawau Island always seems to hold good fish, and I worked it for 3 hours to get a good haul of delicious snapper.

The biggest was about 5 kg (12 pounds), which was challenging with the 3 prong, but the small 'keeper barbs' on the Gat-ku 3 prong seemed to save the day. I hit the fish well straight down into its back and let it swim into the kelp and settle down before diving on it again and wrangling it onto the bottom.

I just love 3 pronging. It rocks.

Nice progression of fish! They sure look tasty!

I know you call them snapper, but would you happen to know any other names for those fish?

That video is HILARIOUS!!! Your son is a natural in front of the camera!

I kept wondering when he was going to shoot his big sister, until I saw that she could shoot back! MAD (Mutual Assured Destruction)!

"Look, wallaby poo...he's been eating well..." => LMAO!

Leave it to the Kiwis to upstage the Aussies...

Re: 3 prongin'

Yeah, the lad is pretty keen on Steve Irwin DVD's. He wants to marry Bindi.

Our snapper Pagrus Auratus are not a 'real' snapper, they are a type of porgy, and very much like the dentex in the mediteranean. They are found in NZ, Aussie, up to Japan, and most other sub-tropical areas have a similar variant. They are a pretty dominant species here and they make up the largest part of the recreational fishery. (Record size is about 35-40 pounds, often speared up to 20 to 25 pounds, but most fishermen catch plenty of them at 1 - 3 pounds). Catch levels are currently very good and noticeably increasing.

Yep. Just standard setup. Hard to beat tried and true setups wherever you are in the world.btw I am using the Gatku because it is quite well suited to most of our fishing here. I am finding I only switch to my crist spear on a dedicated kingfish dive where I need massive punch.

Glad to see that you are knocking them dead.

As an aside, that video is pretty awesome. I can't wait to have my kids do similar things, but I have to have them first.
