NCSD at SBI

Hey guys,
A few of us Norcal Skin Divers area headed out of San Pedro on a friend's Outrage 24. We're hoping to jump in at SBI. We've been keeping an eye of the weather and have the north end of Cat as a plan B. I know the currents can be pretty strong out there. Any suggestions on how to place divers in the water? I.e., do most people do drifts and keep the boat running? Shooting for the beds off webster point down to Sutil Island. All advice appreciated!

Re: NCSD at SBI

This time of year: try to dive on a 4' or less tide change..a 6' change creates rapidly moving current; try to dive early morning, as by 10 it can blow out at SBI; I always try to dive an early morning high tide and a late afternoon high, when the vis is best and the fish are actively feeding. If things at SBI and the west end of Catalina are wiped out due to northernly winds, drop in behind Long Point to dive/anchor....I not only check noaa weather for the inside, but, check Tanner Bank/Cortez to see if the incoming swell is going down or up, giving you some advance idea of conditions to the west....if conditions are so bad you can't anchor, chances are the vis and swell make it unworkable....as always, find the bait and you will find the fish...good luck
...p.s. if you make it over there, give us a report on the kelp growth...Last year, there were lots of bare areas...dropping water temps may have created a comeback on the kelp beds..also, there are squid, yellowtail and wsb on the backside of Catalina if SBI doesn't pan out...

Thank you for the advice Bob! Weather is looking ok, hoping it will improve. I'll be sure to be back with a report of the kelp and fish should weather allow us to make it all the way out.

Re: NCSD at SBI

Weather held out ok this weekend. Josh Thorndike, Justin Yasutake, Oren Gotlib, Nathan, and myself launched the 240 outrage at 5:30 from San Pedro on Saturday. 15 knt breeze and choppy 6 ft swell on Saturday made the ride out to the north end of Cat pretty bumpy. We decided to forego the journey to SBI, thinking the conditions could very well be much worse out there, and decided to check out the backside of Catalina. Drove the boat down to two harbors and back, diving small patches of kelp along the way. Water varied from a blue 20’ viz to a green 7 ft. Very little kelp anywhere from two harbors on over to the west end. Saturday ended up being fairly productive for reef fish, with several goats well over 20”.

Sunday we were met with much better weather. Water was glassy with 4 ft swell and 5 knt breeze. It would have been a perfect day to make it out to SBI. Unfortunately, we had to be back at the dock by noon to make it back to NorCal at a reasonable hour. We dove a few spots near the west end. 20 ft viz in nice blue water made for a productive but brief dive session. Glassy northwest swell let us open the boat up for a speedy ride home. We’re all hoping to make it back down soon for another shot at SBI or the Channel Islands. Thank you guys for sharing your knowledge!
