Re: eating stingray

I've never killed a ray with my speargun, but I do have a custom heavy duty home made gig for sticking em that way. IMO no you couldn't pin a large ray to the bottom. The largest I've successfully giged was 49lbs, and it took all my body weight to keep that guy pinned(and thats with a gig), and I've had some in the 60-70lb range take me for a ride before they slipped away.

I will agree with the others and say its probably best to try and pull it directly into your boat. Rays are strong swimmers and a tough shape to control under water. First thing I do with my rays in the boat is grab the tail with plyers, and slide a fillet knife under the spine. They come off pretty easy. Little rays can reach that barb all the way up to their eyes so watch out. Any thing 10lbs or bigger usually has to thick a tail to reach up to their gill slits with that barb.

I've ate both cownose and southerns and there is a big difference. Cownose rays are very bloody, and even soaking them in milk doesn't always leach out all the blood and urea. As a result the meat will have some slight funky flavors and often will turn grey instead of white when cooked. In other words I dont eat cownose any more. Southerns are great though. White meat just like any other fish. Yes theres cartilage in the wings, just fillet the meat off it and you get 4 nice cresent moon pieces of meat. The very large ones can be a little bloody, but the milk will take care of that. The ridges and texture of the meat hold fish fry batter really well, and honestly stringray is probably my favorite fried fish.

Hope some of that helps, and good eats to ya

Re: eating stingray

I've seen some ****ed up shit on the piers here in Southern California. Guys will hook up on a skate or bat ray, cut one of it's wings off and throw em' back in the water. All because they're a nuisance and steal their bait. The ray will usually just swim in circles until it bleeds to death or attacked by a predator.

I'm not at all gonna shoot a ray, but I have before (like a lot of people) shot one while looking for halibut. What I thought was a HUGE halibut in the sand became an electric ray! As soon as I shot the thing it picked up out of the sand and towed me and my floatline about 25 yards, as I was keeping the most pressure possible hoping it would rip off. I speared it on the tip of it's wing as I thought that was the halibuts head so I'm sure it survived.

About the stinger.. A lot of fisherman that catch rays by mistake will cut their stinger off with a knife in case they or another fisherman hook up with it again in the future. Find the barb. Cut it off. Wah-la! No more stinger.

Re: eating stingray

I was kidding, but I wouldn't want to spear a stingray because of all the prep time to clean and cook it.

Re: eating stingray

Has anyone ever shot a ray with more than one stinger? I've seen pictures where they can grow up to 4 stingers- one right on top of each other....
