Wasted length

So I have an Andre wood gun and I am coming from a reverse trigger Sea Sniper. My issue is that there is alot of space wasted at the tip and rear, so the effective length is several inches less than it could be. I didn't consider this when I bought it, so just wondering if it serves any purpose to have the extra overhang or if it's ok to modify it and move the band slots closer to the tip?
