Gone to Baja Trip Report 3-2 thru 3-7
Hola spearos!
Well the season has started! My first trip of the season was a great one. The water temp in the northern gulf of CA is 59-60 right now. Vis was between 15 and 20 feet. Our first day we got into a school of yellow snapper and in a few hours put 13 in the cooler. We went back to Alfonsinas and had them cook them up for us for dinner! The next day we hit another spot in the islands. This time it was time for some big barred snapper. One of them we got was 9.6kilos after we had cleaned it. We also got some more yellow snapper and a few grouper. The next day was more of the same. My customer was tired of seeing my parnter Naty and I with big stringers and traded me his Rob allen for my Riffe MT3. He was able to start nailing the grouper that where out of range from his RA. The last day we got a nice gulf grouper and some more lepoard grouper also. Went back to San felipe and I had my first taste of yellow snapper prepared philidelphia style! Im sure this was the first of many more plates of fillets for the year. A couple of mango margaritas and then a "wee dram of scotch" on the beach made it complete. I would like to thank the south african, english, crazy cool spearo that came along. Its alway great to meet spearos from other countries, looks like he will be comming back to our neck of the woods again. From what I hear you have to wear 9mill in the summer to dive england. After we came back to San diego he went out and got himself a new MT3 with the poly wings and an ice pick tip. Looks like this is gonna be another great season. I would post pics but my new camera is more powerfull than my windows 98 computer and I will need some time. There where other shooters in the area like, fuzz, PVspearo, FIshtilyoudrown, and Freedro. I havent seen the pics that those guys have on the board yet. The fish that they shot where all real small compared to the ones I shot Hey you guys dont you have any pics of those "little" early season baja fish? Hope to get some pics up soon, Happy hunting GTB www.gonetobaja.com www.spearfishingvideos.com www.sea-wolves.com

Re: Gone to Baja Trip Report 3-2 thru 3-7
Thanks PV!!!
I have to get a new computer to post my pics. Thanks for putting yours up so people can get an idea of the fish we where shooting. By the way, the one with the guy in a towell is kinda scary...... Nice fish Fuzz, the blue one is a monster of a parrot fish. Hey PV, You cant shoot those dog tooth snapper this far north in Baja, they dont exist. You guys should just move down and build a place next to mine...... I got a couple of pics of some "small ones" that Im gonna post in a few more days. I might not be able to break all of your records PV but Im walking the edge on the Barred Pargo! Good pics guys, thanks for posting them! Re: Gone to Baja Trip Report 3-2 thru 3-7
Yum, yum! I just finished a nice plate of Cabrilla fried lightly in olive oil with a crisp corn flour coating the way Antonio at Alfonsina's makes it. Side of homemade coleslaw and black beans. Couldn't be better. Had fish tacos made with some of the yellow snapper on Saturday up in Mammoth. It's always good to bring some nice fish home from Baja.
This was Fuzz' first trip to the Northern Cortez, and I commend him on his selectivity and taking some real trophies.

A familiar site - GoneToBaja and Freedro anchored out in front of Alfonsina's at dawn.

Wow nice fish!
Fuzz, way to go on the Golden Grouper! Those things are considered very rare and are a prized catch. |

Re: Gone to Baja Trip Report 3-2 thru 3-7
Nice sunrise pic, Freedro. It reminded me of an early trip down there in which we learned where not to anchor for the night. My Whaler barely escaped. The owner of the grounded boat shall remain nameless. That's ScFishguts in the pic. He's not the owner.
Ahh the memories.... Nate in O.C. |

But, what the hell, it's not like he's in any position of refute me. So, yes, it was him. We told him and told him not to anchor there but he wouldn't listen. Rookie mistake by ScottyWotty. Nate |
