I've asked for refunds, but Olympus won't give me a refund. They just keep sending me replacement cameras. This time, they sent me their newest model, the "Tough 8000" whcih takes 12 megapixels but is still only rated for 33 ft.

I give it 1.5 months before it spazs out on me.

I don't use a housing. Olympus claims for it to be water proof to 33' and I expect for it to work as claimed. It does work for periods of time as claimed, but has not lasted for me. I have asked Olympus 3 different times to just issue me a refund so I can go with a regular camera in a housing instead. It's their call at this point.

I'm betting the new one will croak and I'll just keep getting replacements at no charge for the next few years...

I wish I could take it down to 150' though. Maybe someday on a newer model...

My 770sw corroded a hole in itself even AFTER I washed it! I have the housing now and Its just a pain in the ass so I barely take pictures anymore.

Crazy.
Tough 8000 Camera arrived Friday.
Used it for the first time today.
Haven't washed it yet.

Has some new features such as tap-touch (tap it to make it do things - for example, tapping it on the screen side will make it display the most recent image. No need to look for the playback button.

Also has a depth gauge thingabob. Will warn you when you get too close to 30'. I assume it beeps or something. Fat good that does me (deaf).

Otherwise it looks pretty much the same with a slicker program interface and a higher megapixel rating.

Gotta work on Thursday... Thanks for the invite though!

I did build a disco ball flasher for onos though. Can't wait to try it out. Maybe tomorrow if the weather isn't too horrible.

Camera update:

Olympus Tough 8000 has proved to be the WORST camera of them all so far. It died after just 2 dives, and I've been struggling to get my old media off of it for the past few days before I mail it in. Working on it right now... Gotten to the point where I'm now putting the memory card in my black berry in hopes my black berry will allow me to transfer the images over to my computer... How nuts is that?

I've had the same problem with my camera, died after five dives. no bueno. They said I should look into one of the cases, but I have talked to a few scuba guys that said they leak too.

Anyway nice fish in begining of the post, I am hoping for my first ono next week when i'm in the islands.

late,

Yeah, I've been told to get the housing for this camera as well.

Problem is, this camera's quality is kinda subpar. If I'm going to rock a housing, then I'd rather use a better quality/brand camera.

However, on the other hand, by having a supposedly waterproof camera in a housing, if it leaks a bit, then it should not hurt the camera. But who knows with this thing...

Yep for sure, you never know.

I am actually going to be using it in your neck of the woods next week. I'm heading over to Honolulu and Kona. Mainly shore diving, but I want to charter a boat in kona if I can. Any suggestions?

Re: 10/6 South Shore - Bizzare Ulua Behavior and My First Ono

Chartering a boat wtih Calvin in Kona seems to be all the rage these days.

As for Oahu, contact West Side Dive and Tackle about chartering a boat dive out on the west side.

My wife has encouraged me to look into taking people out on my PWC as a business, but I can't legally charge $ as I'm not a business so I'm staying away from that. Just seems too complicated with getting a GE license and dealing with insurance. You can shore dive pretty much anywhere on Oahu, but your best bets will be the south and the west side.

South: More crowded. More safe.
West: More break-ins. More pounding (fishing pressure).
