Looking for free dive blade fins
Hello everyone I’ve been a diver since I was 12, I’m 37 now. I primarily free dive , however I’ve always used scuba fins. Can anyone recommend some decent blades to get into? Also I wear a size 13 shoe and will be using 7mm socks if you can recommend a size thanks again.

Re: Looking for free dive blade fins
I have had my Moanas for at leas three years and couldnt be happier. I started with maki plasti fins and they are a great way to get used to long fins snd fir the price they are awesome. And if you go that way you will have extra pair or you can lend them to a buddy or sell them after you learn more or decide what carbons you want

Carbons are great but not needed. For starters, find a comfortable foot pocket (that you can switch out your blades), start with plastics which are great around rocks and for beating up (lobster diving). Then upgrade if you want to Carbon blades when you want. Plastics are less efficient but can be utterly abused.

I would recommend talking to the folks at Mako, good service and good products. They can recommend the right fins for you. I don't work for them but I've always been happy with their products.

Re: Looking for free dive blade fins
Thanks for the recommendation! With our direct to consumer distribution setup, word of mouth recommendations are what we rely upon.
These fiberglass fins may be what the OP is looking for, however it is important to pick the best stiffness. In general, we recommend that divers under 200 lbs should select the soft blades. https://www.makospearguns.com/Compet...mcffgf-blk.htm Probably the 12-13 size should work. We have developed a very reliable sizing chart, but it pertains to 3 and 5 mm socks. Thanks! Dano

Thank you for all the responses. Even though I’m all about buying the best gear I can afford, however right now I don’t think carbon is in the budget.
Also I’m 300lbs if that makes a difference in blade stiffness |

Re: Looking for free dive blade fins
Mako has been good to me. I am a size 13 as well and the 12-13 foot pockets work, but I wear 5 mm socks and once in a while, my feet hurt. 7mm might be a bridge too far... Have you tried 5mm socks already? Personally, I'd prefer an extra 2 inches on the arms and legs of my wetsuit, over the extra 2mm of neoprene around my feet.
If you want to get into carbons, Nautilus has some damn good fins for the price. At least they did when I bought my carbon blades (put them in mako footpockets). Ever since then, I haven't paid attention to price, etc... |

Re: Looking for free dive blade fins
Thanks for the input. I do a lot of cold water diving just north of San Francisco. I could probably get away with 5mm socks.
