Hybrid Spearfishing......
Okay I just thought this up and was curious if anyone has ever tried it. So the idea is to try spearfishing with a fishing pole. I'd like to use this idea to get some sheepshead in deep water. Wouldn't it be cool to see that fish hit your line while your floating on the surface? I might just be tempted to try this out just for the fun of it. Good idea or GREAT IDEA@!!!!

Believe it or not I have heard of this before. Either on deeperblue or on the old spearfishing.com forum before it was lost. I don't remember much about it though. Top graphic mate

Re: Hybrid Spearfishing......
Lol honestly I try it from time to time, but without a pole. We can't spear trout or redfish here in Texas. So while diving the jetties and seeing them all the time, I'll pickup a lure or two from the rocks with mono attached and dangle it over them...no takers yet

Re: Hybrid Spearfishing......
I had a friend use a cuban yo-yo to do some hook and line fishing underwater. He hooked a barracuda and got himself all wrapped up. One of those-seemed like a good idea at the time-moments

Re: Hybrid Spearfishing......
so what do you think the game warden would say when you come up with a game fish?

Re: Hybrid Spearfishing......
I think the regs are so vague they may consider you a vessel, remember rockfishing is closed to boat based fishing.

Re: Hybrid Spearfishing......
Not to mention that you will not be able to cast very far. unless you lay on your back and flip it over your head. The only problem I see with this is that your legs will work well to guide the hooks and weights straight at your balls if you do not get it just right.

I've handlined small fish(1-1.5 lb redear sunfish) while swimming before, but I'd be afraid of what rojo said can happen in the ocean.

Re: Hybrid Spearfishing......
I gave it a shot a while back hunting for rockfish. I had about 50' of vis at this spot I go to often so I made up a rig. I took a water bottle and wrapped about 75' of dacron around it and tied on a big iron. The idea was when I spotted a good looking hole I could just bang around the iron to see if anyone was home. No luck and I gave up after a few minutes, kinda of a waste of time.

Re: Hybrid Spearfishing......
i think it would be mre fun on scuba.. just break up a bunch of urchins, and as they swarm on the stuff, dangle a big chunk from like 10' overhead, and get towed around by a 20# sheephead. awesome.. or just shoot it. i dunno. i think it sounds like fun.

Re: Hybrid Spearfishing......
Thanks for the comments everyone, when I have some time I'm going to try to set up a simple line and hook deal attached to some sort of flotation device (cause I'm cheap) I'll just buy a bag of squid. If I see any urchins I'll try to smash them and attract some fish. Then I'll just pick a spot and try some old fashion hook and line action. I think this could work. I'm getting a sd850 for Christmas so I might even film it!
P.S. Is the sd850 a good camera for underwater filming? I've been debating this.... I'll probably get it unless there is something at a comparable cost with good underwater and above water shooting. |

Re: Hybrid Spearfishing......
I havent tried it myself but i have seen someone doing it. I dont know how effective it would be. But, it won't hurt to try.
