Lost Diver in Bahamas
Prayers offered that they find him. This is Jim Abernathy's operation which is based in Palm Beach County.

Re: Lost Diver in Bahamas
There is not much above water down current of Tiger Beach. If he's still breathing and they don't find him the next beach he'll see is on Iceland. Let's hope they find him.

Re: Lost Diver in Bahamas
I know exactly where this happened, and have seen the Abernathy boat out there feeding sharks many times. The current can scream in that area north and if he got caught in it could be real bad.

Re: Lost Diver in Bahamas
I know I've posted this before but I carry an EPIRB in an old light canister attached to my backplate. Cheap insurance.

Re: Lost Diver in Bahamas
I used an old UK C8 I had and cut the handle off. The EPIRB is a FAST FIND which are selling for under 300 I believe. Back plate makes for easy mount. That is about it.

Re: Lost Diver in Bahamas
are you people, honestly saying that without an eprob. or such; that it is up to the diver? I have been on many dives I did not trust the dive organization. I know many here are one man one sea. I am the same; but still, I have seen people rely on the charter to keep them safe. if that is your career. it's on you,to take a novice

Re: Lost Diver in Bahamas
I own a boat, I have refused to take divers on, I don't trust. I only got on good boats because of trust. I stressed out and said no when it isn't an absolute. I'm not shifting blame, I'm saying it is not a piece of equipment, that keeps us safe.

Re: Lost Diver in Bahamas
I have a Fastfind + with dive canister. With any luck I'll never need it but the long swims home I've already done taught me to ALWAYS have a way home that doesn't include the boat I went out on. From Tiger Beach the only "Plan B" that has any certainty is a PLB/EPIRB type device that reports your location that not only tells everyone where you are, but also starts the search automatically. North of West End if the USCG is coming to get you surface craft are several hours away, and choppers are at the extent of their effective range.

Re: Lost Diver in Bahamas
It is not clear to me if they know that he actually surfaced. He may have had other issues (low air or health problems) subsurface.
It is a big ocean, but if he is on the surface, he has a decent chance of being rescued. The US Coast Guard is looking, so let's hope that they are successful. |
