Ha Ha! This has always been a fun debate.

BurgJohn - Intrepid is the "best" mono out there. Semi-custom, top flight fit & finish, stepped hull. Totally a fair comparison. That is why I used these 2 videos.

Greekdiver -

Kmoose - What good 30ft mono sells for less than 100k?
Wow, it's been a while since I looked at new boat prices. I don't think you can buy a bass boat for under 100k after looking!

I still think mono hulls offer more boat for the $ especially in the used market where I look. There are 31 Fountain TEs all over for under $40k. Its a true 27' running hull that will show its ass to any 28 cat I've been on.

The worst I have ever been beat up on the water was on a 28 cat in 3 foot quartering head seas. Oh sure, straight into them was great but the other 350 degrees of travel options would beat the fillings out of your teeth and leave you with detached retinas. I'm not saying that all monos are the living end, but what a cats do well cannot even come close to redeeming all of their shortcomings.

Burg-nice boat.

Kmoose - Seacraft is a good strong hull - that is why you see so many being restored. What brand 28' cat?

Cats have thier place. Head on sea and fuel efficient. But take a quartering sea following and it can get scary.

The 28 was a World Cat but I have been punished in others... Kevla, Ocean, sport and a couple others. The least offensive was a big twin V. It was so big I don't even think it was trailerable. Maybe it is the Gulf with its tight frequency swell pattern where cats lose their magic. I can just tell you that where I dive long monos that can bridge the gap walk away from cats in speed, fuel and ride.

My gf can load my boat on trailer in less than 30 secs. Every boat is easy to load if you set up trailer correctly. And trailering a cat is much easier than mono. You can see through the hulls when backing up.

The newer cats ride much better than old style cats.

The future will be 27 ft cats with stepped hulls doing 3mpg 28mph, 50 mph top end with dual 150hp engines

Future? If you could just find a cat that has a 30+ knot cruise, that would be a plus. For claims that cats are so much more efficient than monos I have to wonder why shorter cats with equal power have such slower cruise speeds. I understand with the displacement and semi displacement cats but planing cats stuggle too.

Here is a perfect example of a 35' mono that gets 2 nautical @ 30+ knots. He links several videos of it running the channel and shows the gps and gauges.

I would love to see a 27 cat of any make run with this boat in the Gulf.

Re: Cat vs Mono - Revive the debate

If I "push" my 25 Sea Cat up to 26kts cruising, my fuel consumption drops to about 1.6 MPG. Not exactly slow. I can get my boat onto the trailer in less time than 90% of the people with mono hulls.

You really havent looked at the newer cats. Btw, that boat is not doing 2 mpg with any type of weight. More like 1.4 mpg is real numbers.

What motors guys? That matters... and yal throwing out numbers obviously didn't look at my link so I'll just tell you, it's the 33 invincible w twin 300s getting 2 mpg at 40 mph. Lets see a cat hang w that...

Re: Cat vs Mono - Revive the debate

Ok. I wanna play.
I own a Reinnasance Prowler 24 w/ twin 175 Suzuki. I cruise at 30 mph at less than 4k and get right around 3 mpg. Top speed of 49.999999999 and have tons of storage and a huge console for my electronics.
Before my cat I owned a 23' Bull Dolphin that nearly caused my divorce. I could not get my wife on the mono hull unless it was flat ass calm.
Now she loves goin on the cat.

Once u go Cat, u never go back!

I would never ever even consider a boat that puts it's fuel tanks on the deck. Also, I've seen way too much hype on Americat numbers without the first video of fuel management and gps speeds being shown. If there is one out there I sure would like to see it.... if not it's all here say to me.

And since we're talking about boats it would be alot less confusing if we go with knots instead of statute miles.
