All About Pole Spears & Slings What is it about that traditional method of the early hunter/gatherers under the water? These devices are indeed interesting and effective.

Post Pole Spear Rigging Guide Version 1.3

POLE SPEAR STAYS CONNECTED TO FLOATLINE.
(Ordered by complexity: Easiest to most complicated)

1. TIE DIRECTLY TO RUBBER- (no extra loop)

OR

Removes bulk of rope in the shooting hand and grasps smaller diameter rubber with less sliding

2. TIE TO RUBBER END OF THE POLE-

Tie directly to rubber end. Lots O drag...

3. THREAD THRU RUBBER END EYE/RING/MONO CRIMP

3. MANNY PUIG STYLE- aka "Manny Knot" (tie to the rubber which contains a seperate loop)

4. GATKU STYLE- sliptip line running thru a hole near the front, to the hole in the back, and then to the floatline

POLE SPEAR SEPERATES FROM THE SLIPTIP
(deploys tip and line, leaving pole in divers hand)

Re: Pole Spear Rigging Guide

Great idea.
The only new idea is Dustins (gat-ku.)
Breakaways on polespears have been around for at least 50+ years, and thousands of years on harpoons and handspears
The floatline attached to the end of the spear creates no drag if the floatline is in your shooting hand when the sling is drawn up, if not, yes it will cause a tremendous amount of drag.

You should save the post and then delete it, then after restarting it, save the next 10 or so posts as to keep all this good info at the beginning of the thread. We can send the info to you then you can post up.

I've worked with a couple of divers on reels, and other big game(tuna) breakaways as well as making the following slip-tips: clusterhead, flopper shaft to speedi-string, pranger/shaft, and even a paralyzer.

Re: Pole Spear Rigging Guide

I need to update my website, but the break-away diagram doesn't represent the NEW GENERATION. Then newer design bypasses the hole on the end and wraps around a flathead screw instead. I will update when I can.

Re: Pole Spear Rigging Guide

This is how I rig my spears with a standard polyprop gun clip attached to a Manny Knot. This setup clips easily to my fish threader which is on the end of my floatline:

This next picture shows the same setup but without the Manny Knot. It works 'just OK' - the polyprop does start to develop a memory and so stays fairly tight on the rubber at the apex of the loop, but it is not as effective as the Manny Knot at keeping the floatline from riding back along the rubber. It takes a little more attention to what's going on with the gunclip.

Re: Pole Spear Rigging Guide

Those are all great ideas, I have been rigging my polespears to a 50 foot High visibiity float line and float can for about 2 years now. Great idea when going after big fish or going to the kelp. When going out lond distances i suggest attaching a 2oz weight on a seperate line to use as an anchor or as another way to tie off your float line to the kelp for deeper dives. I would suggest using a smaller diameter float line and downgrading to a smaller clip, The clips and high density line add drag and potential resistance when launching the pole. So utilize the ideas but remember you can downgrade to smaller float line high visibility preffered and a smaller clip.
I will post the pics of my rig later.

Re: Pole Spear Rigging Guide

I just made this small keeper for the Allen key and screws for my crist spear. The idea is that they are secure and I can peg it to the fishing rod sleeve I use to store my spears.

On your picture with the Manny Puig knot you have the band going straight through the end of the spear instead of having line at the end of it...does the band wear out quicker that way? I would think the metal on the spear would start cutting through the band from all the friction when you load.

Re: Pole Spear Rigging Guide

Yeah I worried about that for a while, but I did half-heartedly clean up the hole with some sandpaper first to smooth it, and it seems to be fine.
All bands break eventually from perishing, and usually they perish around where they have been tied to the cord. I am sceptical that there is much difference.

Re: Pole Spear Rigging Guide

Fair enough, I think I'll give it a shot. My only worry now would be that taking that finish off with the sandpaper would open the spear up to a lot more rust...is that happening to you?
