2 decent days kayak spearfishing

Well,we finally got some awesome weather, and here's what I did. Friday, went off higgs beach, about a mile, and got a 11 lb black and a decent hog.the black was hanging on the sand in about 30 ft,in front of a nice ledge, and I didn't even see him till I spooked him.he moved up above the ledge, and hid under a large coral head.I surfaced, rested a little, and on my next dive,I hugged the bottom and snuck around the side of the coral head to the back side where I expected him to be.hmmm, not there.I continued slowly around the coral head, and I see him,he's actually swimming towards me along the bottom, and he stops, and cammos out.slowly ,without making eye contact,I swing my homemade 58 in euro till its lined up with the classic kill shot area.right before I make the shot,I risk a quick glance to make sure im on target.a gentle squeeze, and he moves no more, turning briefly white before returning to normal brown
then yesterday,I scored my pb yellow jack, and a 9.5 lb cubera snapper.off higgs about 3/4 mile this time.I was in the process of stalking another 10-12 lb black that was schooling me by hiding under a large area of coral that had endless passages in different directions,I would just about line up and he would just slip back under,on my third time trying to find him,I see a large shape moving out of the corner of my eye.I look over, cubera!he sees me and starts to swim away from I pursue, and he stats to speed up,he's about 12 ft away, and turns slightly, giving me the profile shot. The shaft dosent penetrate all the way,but toggles nicely on the spine and ribs, all fillets intact.will post pics via tapatalk

Many people would tell you that kayak diving the keys is pointless. Way to go man, those are some nice fish.

Thanks guys! I appreciate the kind words. Yeah kayak diving isn't always like this in Key West, but if you put in your time, you can get some quality fish

Re: 2 decent days kayak spearfishing

nice fish!
sure you weren't off boca chica in the sanctuary?
check your gps man haha
those fish are too nice to be on the coral heads off the beach
those things are usually just full of 11" hogs and tiny grey snapper
the conch kids and tourists beat those to death
you must have a horseshoe up your ass

I can feel a huge wave of kayak spearos coming down here to launch off the beach and fish those rocks this coming year- since reading this story.
Most ,(if not all) will be sorely disappointed.
some lucky ones will accidently drift east into eastern dry rocks sanctuary and think they hit the lottery,ha
The jet skis will be a problem if it becomes more popular.
I almost got hit a few times kayaking those spots about 8 years ago.

Yeah I'm usually way past the jet ski area they usually hug closer to the beach and I'm flying to 20 x 24 off the kayak and also a 12 x 12 off my float off my float line so I'm pretty visible. Horseshoe up my ass listen to this guy is a comedian. Yeah that shallow shit is pretty beat to death and I usually spend for five hours to get one or two decent fish but hey that's all I need

Re: 2 decent days kayak spearfishing

Nice fish !

I 've spoken with you at Higgs while my kid was in the playground there;

You have the yellow yak don't you ?

Great job , you have put your time in learning the area , and it shows .

The vis out under the beach has been awesome lately , nice to see you've been able to work the "roll off" there.

The next few nights may have the "worm hatch" at sunset , so be ready for a lot of fish moving through , and careful of the sharks following the tarpon.

Next time I see you on the beach I'll kick you a spot in the 25 ft roll off that's easy to find and usually very productive. and easily kayak accessible.

Hey thanks, slow boat. Yeah that's me in the yellow yak. Can't afford a boat so I do what I can with the kayak, yeah the rolloff is where it's at.

And here's a note for the Impaler guy. Sorry about the crystal ball comment, I was just following your line of sarcastic humor. I'm not here to make enemies though so lets alljust get along

Really nice fish. The guns you built are great too. What days do you normally get out?
