He knew for sure it was a WR, didn't want to take any chances at all.

Very nice going Ryan!

No, but last summer we had such a huge problem with sea lions that I carried a second spear/gun with me the whole time. I have some gnarly video footage of some bold sea lions. I felt better about two spears in any fish as opposed to one. That was the real reason for towing along two spears all summer. Whether I used the second spear to fend off a sea lion, or subdue the fish.

I recovered multiple yellows this past summer over 20lbs after the sea lions had their fun with me. I speared this Yellow the same day and his head weighed 13lbs.

Damn, that's pretty impressive. Were you actively trying to get a WR YT on polespear, or did it just happen?

Pretty Rad vid man. If I was in Mexico, I would have spent the other shaft on the seal. Congrats on the record man!

Re: New World Record Yellowtail with a Polespear - Official Video

The shot was good. There is no need to 2nd shoot a YT that is well hit; they simply do not tear off from a really good pick in them. You could have horsed the fish up hard, and avoided the sea lion issue pretty well.
While sea lions DO attack loose fish, they don't often climb onto you to take your fish right out of your hand. (They at times do, but not very often.)

All I am saying is, horse the fish in, and avoid the sea lion issue by 90%. SBI and Coronados.... the dog populations are ridiculous these days.

Looks like it was a fun fish, and that is a record you can reset and reset for years to come- a true challenge for you!!

Thanks. It all comes down to intuition and being safe. I've lost fewer fish with a second spear in their head than relying on the first shot. I've lost fish when I thought I had a solid hold too. We all have.

This summer at the islands, the sea lions became so dangerously aggressive and confident that we put many double shots on fish to make sure we landed them before the sea lions could grab them. And you don't always have the luxury of a second spear on hand. In this case I did so I didn't hesitate burying it in his head. We've all had the yellows that wake up the second you touch them and they flop from your grasp and make another run. It's these moments when a sea lion capitalizes on it and you could easily get yourself in trouble. I've got video of a big bull taking my rob allen float 100' to the bottom until it disappeared. He did this within seconds of grabbing the fish. Fortunately I reacted quickly to guide everything away from me but it could have ended badly.

And true, they don't always attack you with a fish in your hand but I wouldn't let my guard down on any sea lion that I ever meet again in the water after last summer.
