Fish kills spear-fishing diver off Florida

Fish kills spear-fishing diver off Florida

Reuters News Service

MIAMI -- A Florida diver shot a large grouper with a spear gun then apparently drowned when the fish sped into a hole, entangling the man in the line attached to the spear, investigators said.

The 42-year-old man, whose name was withheld, was free-diving in about 25 feet of water off the lower Florida Keys Saturday and speared a Goliath Grouper, Monroe County Sheriff's Detective Mark Coleman said.

"It looks like the fish wrapped the line attached to the spear around the victim's wrist. The fish then went into a hole in a coral rock, effectively pinning the man to the bottom of the ocean," Coleman said in a news release.

Police divers found the speared fish tightly wedged into the hole, with the man's body still tangled in the line, a sheriff's spokeswoman said.

Goliath Grouper are the largest members of the sea bass family and can weigh hundreds of pounds.

Jewfish are a no no...sorry it happened but shouldn't have been shooting it to begin with...although, if they become legal again I'll be first in line.

I feel bad for his family, but what was he thinking?????? I wouldn't tackle something like that while free-diving at least not without a good sized powerhead. Not to mention loosing everything to the F&G boys. I wonder what size it was? Maybe it attacked him? Just doesn't make sense.

Our crew was freediving the lower Keys for the past 4 days but no jewfish were speared and everyone is fine.

I might have to change the saying under my avatar to stupid kills ... very sad... been dropping like flys lately, I'll bet he was the dive buddie of the guy on the PWC...

My condolences to the family.

I would guess that he may have shot the fish in self defense.

A panicked person in self defense seems more likely to me than someone intentionally trying to poach one with a line gun.

Free shaft w/.357, stops attacking GG, why on earth would this guy try to lineshaft a GG while free diving? I have shot big cudas and they pull hard, I cant imagine what a big GG would do. Common sense is the lesson here, and his family has to pay for it

Exactly why it sounds like self defense

I'd imagine if I was being attacked by a jewfish that I'd shoot it with whatever I had. This may be a case of a human fatality caused by an overaggressive jewfish. At the rate that those beasts are multiplying, I fear that it won't be the last. I hope that they killed the jewfish to protect other divers from a similar fate - there is no point in taking chances. My sympathy to the family and friends.
