Question Differences between a female and male lobster?

Anyone got some pics to showcase the differences between a female and male spiny lobster?

Daniel ,the Females will have larger finlets on the underside of the tail that cross over each other, this is how they protect their eggs. The Males have smaller finlets which do not touch, and the have two sperm sacs just above the base of the tail . Once you see them both ,you can see the obvious differences. http://atsea.nmfs.hawaii.edu/photos/spinysex.htm

The females also have bigger tails. The males have almost an odd looking carapace/tail size ratio, especially when they get BIG.

Also, females rearset of legs are "clawed" so they can tend to their eggs. This finlets are an easier more obviouse clue.

Re: Differences between a female and male lobster?

Thanks for the tips everyone! From this angle the clawed legs vs no clawed legs is probably the best way for me to tell male from female.

Here's a quick pic I made for future reference.

The claws are a lot more subtle than the bottom of the tail.

This image is from a different species, but the differences in sexes are pretty apparent. Basically, if the finlets on the bottom of the tail overlap, it's a female.

Dude, You almost had me thinking you experienced lobster diver.

If you hold a male/female side by side looking at the bottom of the tail it is apples and oranges like Ralph said.

Here is another way to tell a female.

Hey you're just not looking at my statement with an open mind. When people post up reports of lobsters, they rarely flip the lobster around for everyone to see the flaps... or eggs. So all you've got is the front side to view. Which is why I said....

And experienced lobster diver? Yah if you count one season experienced

But thanks for that obvious photo Dockrat. I'm sure it will be as helpful as the rest of your posts on spearboard
