Might want to Avoid Baja for a Few Weeks

...Gas shortages at Baja pumps, a 20 percent price increase due to de-regulation/ privatization and protesters getting more violent at the border crossings, are all reasons to stay up here. Protestors were rumored to have been beaten by police in Rosarito and parts of Highway 1 were blocked all the way down to San Quintin. If you have to go, suggest you take Highway 5, crossing at Mexicali and stay off Highway1 until reaching Laguna Chapala, topping off your tanks constantly at the open stations....As always, it is a good idea to check for updates from one of the travel clubs like Vagabundos del mar or Discover Baja.....Weather is looking bad for the next week. As I post this, my son, Billy, is 500 miles down Baja in 10' breaking swells heading north, trying to reach the lee of Cedros Island before the 13'ers and 35 mph winds hit them broadside on Friday or Saturday ....their winch burned out at Hurricane Bank and they had to cut the anchor loose...Now, the crew of the Independence will have to stay out to sea and take a beating coming home.....makes me glad I am retired from commercial fishing!

We were down on the east cape when shit hit the fan. The lines at gas stations were several 100 yards long at times. Glad we ran diesel those lines were empty. Heard there were protests that shut down the boarders too

Was down towards guerro negro from the 2nd through the 7th. As we were heading home we got word from the truckers that the protests started around camalu so we opted to go the mexicali crossing. Lucked out cause there were still a few gas stations in san filepe at the time with gas. Crossed back to the U.S. and our phone were blowing up with friends telling us to stay away from the TJ and Otay crossings, apparently they were shut down.

There is diesel at more spots than there is gas available...add some Trump protesters to the picket lines and things will stay lively for awhile......

Re: Might want to Avoid Baja for a Few Weeks

I was in BOLA from the 13th to the 16th (this past weekend). No problem with gas or protesters. 3 1/2 hr wait at the border in TJ..... It rained on Friday and Saturday, clear skies Sunday and Monday.....Just be sure to gas up often...just in case....

No problems with gas, not protesters. Gas prices were rised and people protested. Now it's done. Life is back to normal.
I'm back in Panama and tomorrow I'm heading out. Water has cooled down and there's corvina...
