The Big Lings
I'm wondering when the big lingcod move into the shallows (freediving zone). I've heard spring is the time for them, then some have said late summer and fall. Does anyone have a good estimate for the Newport to Astoria zone?

Re: The Big Lings
They spawn in February, so the last part of January to the middle of March is usually when they come into shallower water to spawn. Unfortunately, that is often the time of the year we have some of the roughest water.
Navanax (Ken) knows a lot more about that than I do, maybe he will chime in.

Don't let Max (North Star) fool you, he limits out on big lings everytime he gets wet!

Re: The Big Lings
Thanks for the time frames. My brother and I both just pulled in decent lings, so they're definitely here. I have another quick question. I've just been using my old 3/2 surfing wetsuit with a 5mil full suit on top of it, but I've been seeing all of these 2 piece suits. What's the point of these and can you even try them on anywhere in Oregon or are they only found online?

Re: The Big Lings
The two piece suits are not available anywhere in Oregon to my knowledge. I bought mine at The Freedive Shop in Sacramento, California.
The purpose for them is that they have extreme flexibility coupled with excellent warmth, because of the tremendous flexibility of the neoprene itself, and because the open cell (raw neoprene) interior sticks to your skin like glue, prohibiting water ingress and egress, so you stay warmer. Their soft neoprene makes them less durable. You have to use lube to get them on (hair conditioner mixed 50 50 with water works great) but once they are on they are like a second skin if they fit right. A scuba suit has stiffer and more durable neoprene, and is lined with nylon on the inside for easier donning, but you get more water movement in and out as a result.

The online dealers have detailed size charts so unless you are unusually disproportionate, you should be able to get a solid fit without trying one on.
