Mexico fish report update march 2010

The same way El Niño is affecting the surface wáter temp , more wind and wierd tropical storms off season, is giving us the chance to find pelagics that we´ll never expected during this time of the year.

The yellow fin tunas are running 45 miles from Punta Mita, very far from the highspots, feeding on crabs and small sardines or traveling with porpus back and forth from the islands to the drop offs, which makes hunting very difficult, but lot´s of fun with rod and reel casting poppers right on them with two tunas over 150lbs and lot´s of 60-80lbs.

So considering this we gave it a try anyways on our first day, the boys really wanted to see them at least, so we did several attempts jumping ahead of the schools but with no luck, is unpredictable, so we catched a couple on the line for dinner and back to El Banco were we hunted for the rest of the day with only a wahoo out of range, and a mahi that some how got away.

The second day decided to stay inshore for reef hunting, we know that this time of the year is good for AJ´S and small pargos so after diving every single highspot or pinnacle we managed to get a nice AJ, seeing some big rooster that the boys were not interested on shooting, yellow snappers, sierra mackerel, leopard groupers and a WHITE SEABASS, I don´t now if the guys brought it down with them or what, but they did shoot a white seabass or Corvina blanca here in Punta Mita.

Our third day in the water was mostly at Corbeteña , 20 miles offshore, looking for wahoos and with no hope of finding yellow fin tunas, but the boys never shoot wahoo before so it sounded like a good plan, we runned into several wahoos, some were big, 70lbs +, Paul shot one of the big ones and after all the floats surfaced the fish was gone due to too much pressure. Some other opportunities on wahoo but between the wind and lack of relaxation we decided to head in and start the party earlier back in town.

The last day, everything happens on the last day, back to Corbeteña again hoping for big wahoos , we had perfect conditions, even the water was better on Terrafin so we had that feeling that there was big fish in the area.
After diving the morning we had 4 or 5 wahoos on board, some 50lbs,Leyton lost a big one, 80lbs plus he said, all we could see were all the floats down to 20ft. Taking a lunch break, we spoted a huge blue marlin right on the surface, with the crew screaming MARLIN, MARLIN; jump in, jump in!!! Luke did it, as soon as he hits the surface the monster marlin turns right back to him, so there he was face to face with the fish of a lifetime, the first shot was close to the belly and couldn´t shoot it again for a while, the second shot was the biggest deal, the marlin super mad , started charging the boys, mostly Leyton, that was able to spear the fish again before he got speared by the fish, the marlin did a crazy run straight to Leyton´s chest, but the guy has skills and managed to place a good second shot, after that it was all about waiting for the marlin to give up, end it up shooting the fish for almost 3 hours.
This was only possible by working as a team in and out of the water, it really took the best effort from the divers and crew as well, we are very happy that this happened to a group of guys that never dove here before and mostly because we enjoyed working with them during the week, they really respected our decisions on where to dive, how to do it, they understood right away our knowledge in the area and gave us the chance to work the way we like. And yes, we are more expensive than other charters, but this is what you get!!! Enjoy the photos, all the underwater pics and HD video of the marlin fight coming soon!!

Nice report C-Bass! Thanks for the great write up! Can't wait to go back down there in October. You run a great operation down there. Yourself, Chilo and Javier are extremely knowledgable watermen. Anyone thinking of going down to Punta De Mita with PMexpeditions, you will not be disappointed. It is a must do if you like big fish. These guys know whats up. Thanks again for an amazing trip!
