4 strokes left running 20 minutes without water

I pulled my boat onto the trailer and left the two 115 hp Yamaha four stroke Outboards running, from Maximo Park up the Interstate 20 minutes. One shut off prior to getting home, the second motor was running when I pulled into the driveway. I let the motors cool 2 hours, slowly put water to them. They both started. I pulled the spark plugs and have consistent compression across all cylinders. I need to pull the lower units off and change water pumps. I'm sure the water pumps are melted. I was going to change oil in motor and lower unit and spark plugs.

Any other recommendations other than making sure the motors are shut off before I drive home. It was entirely my fault, I normally do everything myself but had a helper this time. Motors are a year 2000.

No idea why one did not shut off in one did. I let the motor cool before putting water to them, for fear of cracking the block by putting cold water to a hot motor

Finding hard to believe you could strap the hull down and not hear the motors running unless..... never mind.

Run em till they blow. You're changing pumps, and oil so there is nothing you can really do other than that. You will either be really lucky or getting new motors.

Forgot to mention. I don't drink and had nothing to drink. I climb up and down the bow and use a bow chain. I leave the plugs in and don't walk around the stern after pulling out. I can't hear the engines running, they were quiet. Been boating/trailering 40+ years. 1st mistake.

I thought we were supposed to stay hydrated?

When I took my Pennsylvania boating safety course, they said heat stroke (not drowning!) was the #1 cause of injury when boating during summer months.

With it already wet inside the engine, the engine at idle, and getting air flow on the way home. Me thinks they'll be fine if you change the engine oil. You did the right thing to let them cool slowly down. Of course you'll certainly need a water pump kit. You probably didn't even need new plugs but hey, better safe than sorry. A good indication of the remaining pedigree will be the state of the engine oil. You can always have that tested too if you can't tell by the smell/look.

So you've been towing for 40 years and don't use a transom strap? Florida law requires it! Qualified captain 40 years in the making.

I was thinking something similar - if you strap down your transom, how could you have not heard the motors running? Unless either A) You didn't strap down or B) Someone else was supposed to do it and didn't think about the motors running or mention it.

We've all made mistakes, though, boating. I don't like to kick a guy when he's down.

Good advice above about the motors, though. Good luck!

Does the motor record overheat alarms? You could buy the software on Ebay and check yourself. Otherwise I'd say it's fine. People over exaggerate this situation all the time. I doubt you'll even see a difference in the impeller when you change it! Mark my words and post the pic!
