Exclamation Triggerfish in Cabrillo Beach

Went to Cabrillo beach this morning around 7 am since the rest of Palos Verdes was looking milky and decided to try my luck looking for flatties. Vis was about 5-7 ft max. Saw a couple short halibuts but was able to pull out a decent size halibut and a turbot.

The crazy part is when I was searching the jetty, I saw something under a rock that I thought originally was a perch, but when I got closer I noticed it was a trigger fish! I was able to spear it, it measured to about 14 inches (measured it just by eye balling it), and I fried it up when I got home.

I am not sure, but aren't these fish supposed to be further south in Mexican waters? Why would it travel this far north?

My guess is that it came up in the 96 el nino and just stayed.

I wish we had more triggers out here because they make great ceviche.

Re: Triggerfish in Cabrillo Beach

A couple of year ago a guy shot a Triger at Otter Cove inside Monterey Bay. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes.

Re: Triggerfish in Cabrillo Beach

We have an unlimited trigger population up here in the gulf. Crazy they can live in your cold waters

Re: Triggerfish in Cabrillo Beach

we shoot triggers (ocean grey) all summer long and into the fall here in the Northeast...
They travel up along the east coast with the warming waters, we seem to be getting more and more every summer..

Yeah, I've seen those guys come up in abundance on cattle boats fishing those artificial reefs for sand bass.
