That is what I'm looking at too, but why would a mako be a better choice for the first gun?

If your first gun is a rob allen you may find it hard to load at first and shy away from the brand. With mako you have a loading but making it easier to learn how to load a speargun in general.I have had freinds sell their rob allen the first week they got it because of welts on their chest.Once you learn the
technique with the mako it make things a whole lot easier.

I don't see what the big fuss is loading a Rob Allen. 'Fishy Killa' is 15 years old and doesn't have issues loading a 120 RA. My longest RA is a 130cm and it is no different than loading a Riffe Euro 130. When it gets hot in Australia, I wear boardies and load my RA 90 all day long without a loading pad. For those that can't load a gun without some sort of loading pad, Rob Allen has introduced one and it is discussed in this video. If you don't want to watch all the fish that were shot with RA guns in the video, then fast forward to 4.40 to find out more about the loading pad and built in reel mount on the Vecta 2 handles.

A gun feeling awkward is a very subjective matter. There are a lot of people who use and love Omer guns. I personally don't mind them. Just because apexdiver doesn't like Omer doesn't mean you wont.

Looks like you're in Socal. If that's the case you're gonna be wearing a 5-7mm + loading pad. With that much padding you could load the bloody gun from the shaft end.

Re: Looking into first gun. Any ideas??

I aways like to recommend a 48" AB Biller or SeaHornet to people when they first start. They are really tough guns that are very accuate. You can modify as you get into bigger fish and you can find them used for well under your budget (I just sold a Sea Hornet 48" for $110).

A 48" Biller has three bands and a 5/16 shaft so when you throw a slip tip on them they can easily take White Sea Bass and Yellowtail. Put a rock tip on one and they are great for halibut and bass. Its just a good all around gun. There are lots out there if you look. Good luck

Also Newbie- my LDS is pushing Ocean Rhino 52 - I think it is also made in Largo FL and I am in Tampa that could be the reason? Seems like a good gun $450 price tag...

ANy thoughts?

For $450 I would look for something better. Believe me, you'll find it. I'm pretty sure you can get a Riffe 110for about $450cm.
