Anyone willing to donate old shells?

SO this might be a long shot, but seeing if anyone has old abalone shells lieing around that they aren't using. Doesn't matter if they aren't cleaned up or polished, as I would love to clean some up.

Let me know if anyone can support this request. I know I can't offer you compensation, but I can send you a thankyou card or mail some omaha steaks to your house...

Although I'm not willing to part with my collection what do you recommend for cleaning up shells? I have literally never done anything beyond a light scrub and rinse.

Re: Anyone willing to donate old shells?

Do you have a size preferrence? Are they for decoration or do you have a specific purpose that one shell might fit better than another?

As for cleaning, Muriatic acid from the pool section at home depot. Wear goggles, gloves and a mask.

Hey,

No size preference. Obviously a large one is better than a small one, but I can adapt my projects. PM me?

For cleaning, there's this post. I have had good success with just soaking in vinegar and scrubbing with steel wool.

I use to do it the hard way and scrub them with a wire brush then hit it on the grinder for a few hours but those days are over. I use muriatic acid now. Way easier and the shine is amazing. heres a few shells i did with grinding and with acid.
Pic 1. Abalone collection including red ab, white abalone and verigated abalone, teh unique ones were foung in octopus dens.
Pic 2. Ab shell cleaned with muriatic acid
pic 3. Recent abalone trip acid washed shells, super low tide collected alot of empty shells with pitting but they still cleaned up nicely

does muriatic acid eat away and destroy the irridecent layer on the inside?

Re: Anyone willing to donate old shells?

Muriatic can dull teh inside but a quick shine with the bench grinder or dremel will bring back the shine.

Before and after pictures. 4 hours of work with sand paper and a grinder.

It doesn't bother me, but I think some people put vasoline on the inside to protect it before going in the acid. Also, after the acid wash, a coating of mineral oil will give it a nice wet shine.
